Az elmúlt években a szkizofréniával kapcsolatos kognitív deficit számos jellegzetessége feltárásra került. A neuropszichológiai jellemzők meghatározásával lehetőség nyílik a heterogén betegcsoport diszkrét alpopulációkra történő felosztására, amely a biológiai mechanizmusok feltérképezésénél következetesebb eredményekhez vezethet. Másrészt olyan pszichofiziológiai jellegzetességek is is-mertté váltak, amelyek szkizofrén betegek tünetmentes rokonaiban is kimutathatók (például P50 diszhabituáció, a szemmozgások zavara, vizuális backward masking deficit). Ezek a "trait" markerek fontos segítséget nyújthatnak a molekuláris genetikai vizsgálatokban. A funkcionális képalkotó eljá-rások segítségével a kognitív zavarok idegrendszeri alapjaiba is betekintés nyerhető. Az ide vágó tanulmányok egy kiterjedt neuronális hálózat dezintegrált működését mutatták ki (diszkonnekciós szindróma). Az alábbi összefoglalás a munkamemória, a figyelem, a szenzoros kapuzás és a szeman-tikus memória területén feltárt eredményeket tekinti át.
