A tanulmány az egészségmagatartás pszichológiai elemzését mutatja be. Ebből a célból tárgyalja az egészségmagatartás fogalmát, és rámutat arra, hogy az egészségmagatartás tudományos szempontból rosszul definiált, nehezen megragadható fogalom. Az egészségmagatartás sokfélesége kétségessé teszi, hogy lehet-e egységes elméletet fogalmazni predikciójára és magyarázatára. A tanulmányban bemutatjuk a kurrens kognitív elméleteket (egészséghiedelem-modell, a védelemmotiváció elmélete, az anticipált megbánás elmélete), a társas kognitív elméleteket (a szándékos és tervezett cselekvés, valamint a próbálkozás elmélete) és a folyamatelméleteket (a magatartás transzteoretikus változáselmélete, az egészség-cselekvés folyamatmodellje, éndeterminációs elmélet). A tanulmány rövid fejezetet szentel a kritikai egészségpszichológiai szempontoknak is, hangsúlyozva az egészségmagatartásokkal kapcsolódó társas, kulturális és értéktelített jelentés megértésének szerepét mind a tudományos, mind a gyakorlati egészségpszichológiában.A tanulmányban az elméletekkel szembeni kritikai észrevételek mellett az elméleti és a gyakorlati kutatás integrációjának szükségességét is hangsúlyozzuk.
