Az összefoglaló az emlékezetkutatás területén feltárt kognitív eseményhez kötött potenciálokat tekinti át. Ismerteti a területen használt általános kísérleti elrendezéseket. Részletezi az ún. későbbi emlékezeti hatás, a szemantikai előfeszítés, az ismétlési hatás (ismétlési előfeszítés) és a régi/új hatás kapcsán elvégzett fontosabb kísérleteket, a feltárt eredményeket. Foglalkozik az egyes komponensek pontosabb lokalizációjával. Különös figyelmet szentelünk a felismerési emlékezetet a felidézés, illetve az ún. ismertség alapján magyarázó kutatások ütköztetésének, és az e területhez kapcsolódó forrásemlékezeti hatás kutatásának. A tárgyalt tanulmányok eredményeit megkíséreljük összegezni, s egységes (spekulatív) aktivációs magyarázatot kínálunk a jelenségekre.
