Miközben a homogámia genetikai közvetítettségére vonatkozó hipotézist számos vizsgálat alátámasztja, szigorú bírálatok fogalmazhatók meg az ún. genetikai hasonlóság elméletével szemben. Alternatív magyarázatként feltételezzük, hogy imprinting jellegű mechanizmusok, nem pedig „közvetlen”, genetikai szintű detektálási folyamatok a felelősek azért, hogy magunkhoz hasonló párt választunk hosszú távú kapcsolatainkban. Vizsgálatunkban, amely több mint 300 családtagról és idegenről (kontrollról) készült arckép párosításait tartalmazta, a vizsgálati személyek a véletlenhez képest magasabb arányban állapították meg a feleség és a férjük anyja közötti hasonlóságot. Ez a találati gyakoriság szignifikánsan magasabb volt annál, mint amikor a feleség és a férj közötti hasonlóságot ítélték meg. A regressziós elemzés azt mutatta, hogy azok a férfiak, akiknek gyerekkorukban gyakran volt részük anyai elutasításban, kisebb valószínűséggel választottak felnőtt korukban anyjukhoz hasonló feleséget, mint azok, akik kedvezőbb nevelésben részesültek. Ezek az eredmények azt mutatják, hogy a gyerekkori tapasztalatok hatására a fiúk internalizálják anyjuk fenotípusát és ezt, mint egyfajta mentális modellt, használják fel későbbi párválasztásuk során.
