Miközben a homogámia genetikai közvetítettségére vonatkozó hipotézist számos vizsgálat alátámasztja, szigorú bírálatok fogalmazhatók meg az ún. genetikai hasonlóság elméletével szemben. Alternatív ma­gyarázatként feltételezzük, hogy imprinting jellegű mechanizmusok, nem pedig „közvetlen”, genetikai szintű detektálási folyamatok a felelősek azért, hogy magunkhoz hasonló párt választunk hosszú távú kapcsolatainkban. Vizsgálatunkban, amely több mint 300 családtagról és idegenről (kontrollról) készült arckép párosításait tartalmazta, a vizsgálati személyek a véletlenhez képest magasabb arányban állapították meg a feleség és a férjük anyja közötti hasonlóságot. Ez a találati gyakoriság szignifikánsan magasabb volt annál, mint amikor a feleség és a férj közötti hasonlóságot ítélték meg. A regressziós elemzés azt mutatta, hogy azok a férfiak, akiknek gyerekkorukban gyakran volt részük anyai elutasításban, kisebb valószínűséggel választottak felnőtt korukban anyjukhoz hasonló feleséget, mint azok, akik kedvezőbb nevelésben részesültek.
