A környezet átfogó fogalma és értelmezése sokféle formában és tartalommal van jelen a pszichológiában, azonban ezek a szeletek kevéssé állnak össze koherens elméleti rendszerbe. Tanulmányunkban a környezet fogalmának és elméleteinek általános szintu átgondolására vállalkozunk, egy ökológiai rendszerszemléletu szintézis körvonalainak felvázolására törekedve. Eszmetörténeti gyökerekként elemezzük Jakob von Uexküll (1938) Umwelt fogalmát és Dewey és Bentley(1949) tranzakcionalizmusát, valamint a pszichológia története során megfogalmazódott lényegesebb ökológiai nézopontokat. A környezetpszichológia fogalmi rendszerének és nézopontjainak áttekintése után választ keresünk azokra a kérdésekre, hogy mi a környezet, miért fontos a pszichológiának, és fordítva: a pszichológia miért lényeges a környezet számára?
