A tanulmány a Wason-féle kártyaszelekciós feladat főbb problémáival foglalkozik, amelyet 1966 óta folyamatosan vizsgálnak, mert a kutatók tucatjai nem képesek megmagyarázni, hogy az embereknek mintegy 90%-a miért nem tudja megoldani ezt az egyszerű feladatot a logikai norma szerint. Röviden vázol néhány általános és speciális szabályelméletet a kudarcokkal és az elméletek között folyó vitákkal. Már a reménytelenség jelei mutatkoznak, de újabban úgy látszik, hogy a Johnson-Laird mentális modell elmélet nyer alátámasztást két különböző forrásból. Az egyik a pszichofiziológiából ered: miközben a személyek absztrakt deduktív feladatokat oldanak meg, PET- és fMRI-adatok bilaterális vagy jobb ol­dali parietális aktivációt mutatnak az aktivációs mintázatban, amely térileg organizált mentális működésre utal. A másik egyéni különbségek tanulmányozásából ered: egyes emberek azon képessége, hogy alternatív modelleket generáljanak, korrelál absztrakt következtetési feladatokban nyújtott teljesítményükkel, és ez a mentális modell elmélet lényege.
