A tanulmány első része bemutatja a célok szerepét a személyiség működésében, valamint áttekinti a célok kutatásának néhány elméleti és gyakorlati vonatkozását. A célok fenomenológiai, funkcionális, személyiség-lélektani és szociálpszichológiai szempontból is jelentősek, segítségükkel írhatók le az emberi működés fontos jellemzői. A célok tanulmányozásához rugalmas és sokoldalú eszközkészlet áll rendelkezésre, melynek elméleti megfontolásai közül a kérdésfeltevés fókuszát, az elméleti keret szükségét, valamint a célrendszer hierarchiájának és a célokhoz kapcsolódó jellemzők kiválasztásának szempontjait elemzem részletesen. Példaként bemutatok három olyan kutatási területet, amelyeken a célok elméletét és módszertanát alkalmazták: 1. az elkerülő és megközelítő tendenciák jelentkezését a célokban, illetve ennek következményeit az egészséges pszichológiai működés szempontjából; 2. az én önmagára vonatkozó céljainak személyiségpszichológiai jelentőségét, valamint 3. a vallásosság és spiritualitás pszichológiájának célalapú megközelítését. A tanulmány első részét a kutatás és gyakorlati alkalmazás további lehetőségeinek tárgyalása zárja.
