A patológiás szerencsejáték növekvő népegészségügyi kockázatot jelent. A dolgozat a főbb etiopatogenetikai tényezők áttekintését követően a kórkép alakításában és fenntartásában döntő tanulástörténeti és kognitív folyamatokat elemzi. A legfőbb kognitív disztorzió a véletlen események befolyásolhatóságának hiedelme és az ebből fakadó illuzórikus korrelációk rendszere. A patológiás szerencsejáték kognitív megközelítése lehetővé tette a megfelelő kognitív intervenciók kialakítását, amelyek hatékonysága ma már bizonyított.
