Jelen tanulmány a kötődéselméletet a kulturális összehasonlító vizsgálatok tükrében mutatja be. A kötődés jelenségét univerzálisnak fogadja el, de a klasszikus elmélet által leírt legfőbb fejlődési kritériumokat és a különböző kötődési mintázatok megnyilvánulásait kulturálisan meghatározottnak tekinti. Áttekintést nyújt azon vizsgálatokról, amelyek az elmúlt mintegy hat évtizedben a kötődés kultúrközi különbségeinek témakörében születtek.

Elsőként tárgyalja az úgynevezett étikus vizsgálatokat, amelyek a kulturális különbségeket elsősorban a különböző kötődési mintázatok előfordulási gyakoriságában ragadják meg, majd sorra veszi az émikus megközelítéseket, amelyek a kötődéselmélet számos alaptételét kérdőjelezik meg, így például az anya—gyerek kapcsolat monotropizációját, illetve etnocentrikusnak tekintik az anyai érzékenység megnyilvánulási kritériumait. A tanulmány azt a nézetet képviseli, hogy a kötődési folyamatok a gyermeket körülvevő biológiai és társadalmi környezethez történő legjobb alkalmazkodást szolgálják, és ha a társadalmi-kulturális közeg az euro-amerikaitól eltérő, akkor a kötődés folyamatai is eltérőek lesznek.
