Az egyén jóllétét szolgáló humán szolgáltatások iránti igény növekedése és a tudomány fejlődése napjainkra elérhető közelségbe hozta a személyre szabott orvoslás (personalized medicine) lehetőségét. Ez a rendkívüli áttörést jelentő új megközelítés azt vetíti előre, hogy a talán nem túl távoli jövőben egyénileg lehet meghatározni a betegségek kialakulását és progresszióját befolyásoló genetikai, biológiai és környezeti tényezőket, továbbá személyre szabottan tervezni a megelőzést és a terápiát is. Az uniformizált beteg helyett a személynek kell tehát a kutatások és a terápia fókuszában állnia, az egyedi eset bonyolult bio-pszicho-szociális összefüggés- rendszerével. A fordulat magában hordozza a technicizált, elszemélytelenítő egészségügy átalakításának az ígéretét, de egyúttal egy sor olyan kihívást is, melyek megértésében és megoldásában kiemelt szerepe van a pszichológiai tudományoknak, és különösen az egészségpszichológiának. A feladatok közül kiemelkedik a pszichológusok integrált részvételének szükségessége a multidiszciplináris egészségügyi kutatási és ellátási teamekben. Ehhez társul az a kihívás, hogy a tömegtársadalmakban egyre fokozódik az igény az egyéni – egyedi, szubjektív – tapasztalatok minél több szempontból való átélése, megértése és megosztása iránt. Ezt egyszerre segíti és nehezíti az internetkultúra egyre növekvő térnyerése. A fenti változások episztemológiai és kutatásmódszertani kérdéseket is magukkal hoztak. Ezek közül igen nagy jelentőségű az esetközpontú szemlélet szerepének újraértelmezése, melynek szükségességét fémjelzi az esettanulmánnyal kapcsolatos megélénkülő érdeklődés, az esetmódszer egyfajta reneszánsza a tudományok számos területén.
