Since the terminologies in the studies that have so far dealt with the terminology of the obscene-vulgar language layer seem to be inconsistent, the authors of this text suggest one possible way of the delimitation of the term. The fundamental term would be vulgarity – sentences or syntagmas with obscene content that contain vulgarism, but not necessarily. They serve the fulfillment of various pragmatic functions, the classification of which the authors seek to elaborate and which will be subject to further elaboration. The authors have restricted the swearing (as a verbal sexual aggression) as the term very narrowly, reducing it to one of 14 functions of vulgarity, and have defined it with three indispensable conditions: it must contain vulgarism, it must be addressed directly to the interlocutor and express sexual aggression that would hurt the speaker or someone close to him. The authors have exemplified them by the very rich material of vulgarity in the Speech of Prelog, and they have additionally explained some linguistic peculiarities in the formation of this layer of language and made comparisons with some elements of Austin’s theory of speech acts.
