A tanulmány célja Anthony Giddens társadalomelméleti koncepciójának kritikai elemzése. A hazai modernizáció- és társadalomelméleti szakirodalomban annak ellenére, hogy a 80-as és 90-es években önálló koncepciót dolgozott ki, Giddens mindeddig nem kapott különösebb figyelmet. Ennek megfelelően átfogó jellegében Bourdieu mező- és habituselméletéhez, Luhmann rendszerelméletéhez és Habermas kommunikatív cselekvéselméletéhez hasonlítható strukturációelméletéről sem született reflexió. Az alábbi tanulmány ezt a hiányt kívánja pótolni, bemutatva, miként kapcsolódik egymáshoz Giddens cselekvés- és struktúraelmélete a strukturáció dinamikus modelljében. Minthogy a strukturációelmélet a modernizációelméleti elemzések alapjául is szolgál, így alapos ismeretük nélkül ez utóbbi vizsgálódásokhoz sem férhetünk hozzá. Ez jelöli ki a tanulmány tétjét.
