Az egyetemi rangsorok fontos célja, hogy globális relációban láthatóvá és összehasonlíthatóvá tegyék az intézmények tudományos potenciálját. Az egyik legnépszerűbb egyetemi rangsor a sanghaji Jiao Tong University által készített Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), melynek döntő faktora az egyetemek publikációs teljesítményének kiértékelése, számszerűsítése. Jelen tanulmányban bemutatjuk, hogy melyek az ARWU publikációs indikátorai, illetve hogy azokat a hazai egyetemek hogyan teljesítik. A tanulmány második részében áttekintjük a magyar kutatók útjában álló fontosabb akadályokat, amelyek közül kiemeljük a nyelvtudás, a konferencia-részvétel, a könyvtári adatbázisok és a publikációs technikák kérdéskörét. Végeredményben olyan megoldási javaslatokat fogalmazunk meg, amelyek pozitívan befolyásolhatják a magyar egyetemek pozícióját a nemzetközi egyetemi rangsorokban.
