A reprodukciós problémák kutatásának 20. századi robbanásszerű előrehaladása a meddőség tudományelméleti szempontrendszerének gazdagodását hozta magával. Mára a meddőséget nem csupán lineáris (ok-okozati) tényezők következményeként értelmezik, hanem olyan holisztikus szemlélet keretében, amely figyelembe veszi a test és a lélek egymást feltételező, komplex hatását. A meddőség konceptualizálásában az egyes (biomedikális, szociológiai/demográfiai, evolucionista és pszichológiai) modellek kutatás-módszertani eszközkészlete nagyon különböző, ezáltal a meddőség egyéni és közösségi szintű értelmezése is meglehetősen változatos képet mutat. Az egyes paradigmák kutatásmódszertanában is megjelenő szemléleti különbségek nemcsak tágítják a meddőségről folytatott tudományos gondolkodás kereteit, hanem gazdagítják a meddőség gyógyításának lehetőségeit is. Jelen tanulmány a meddőséget tárgyaló tudományelméleti modelleket, paradigmákat kívánja bemutatni a nemzetközi és a hazai szakirodalom tükrében.
