Abstract

African literature is generally divided into three major periods: the pre-colonial, the colonial, and the post-colonial era. In this paper the authors concentrate on the post-colonial era, the period that one can refer to as the “suns of independence”. It is in that period that many African writers began to challenge the authorities of African leaders while exposing their misdeeds concerning the ‘famous’ independence which many Africans saw as a general remedy. Unfortunately. Africa became a victim of all kinds of political problems, which brought about political instability and misery. Our study will x-ray the work of the Congolese writer Sony Labou Tansi, who has been portraying African contemporary realities beginning from his La Vie et demie (1979) to his Commencement des douleurs (1995). We shall analyse the political problems posed in his first two novels: La Vie et demie and L’Etat honteux from a socio-critical perspective. We shall then propose some solutions to the exposed problems.
