Summary

The instruction of Hungarian as a foreign language has been experiencing a boom in the appearance of teaching, supplementary and practice materials, but there are hardly any lexicographic works on the market: no monolingual learners' dictionary exists in Hungarian.

The paper presents work on a project that aims to fill that void. The dictionary contains culture specific words, phrases and proper names that are used in everyday life; words that foreign language learners meet on a daily basis, but they either cannot find them in regular dictionaries, or they do not find enough information about them in regular dictionaries.

The paper introduces the phases of compiling the dictionary: i) headword collection; ii) entry writing; iii) final revision, filling gaps and making cross-references. The dictionary contains approximately 2000 headwords and work on it is in the third, final phase.
