A gyomorrák a 9. leggyakoribb daganat Magyarországon, halálozásban pedig a 4. helyen áll. A hagyományos kezelési módszerek az előrehaladott gyomorrák ellátásában nem hoznak jelentős eredményt. A tumor molekuláris biológiai jellemzőinek megismerésével azonban ma már lehetőség van célzott terápia adására is, mellyel jelenleg a leghosszabb túlélési időt lehet elérni.
