Two particularities of the portrait of Michael VII are examined in this study: the loros of a traditional type and the sword, which is associated here with the loros on a singular way. As Géza holds a sword as well, the crown orned by these enamels may be interpreted as a diplomatic gift provenant of the Constantinopolitan court which had to follow a (real or desired) military alliance between Byzantium and Hungary. The sending of this precious object of a very high rank, adorned with imperial portraits proves the utilisation of art treasures in the service of the politics of Emperor Michael VII.
