The Lutheran church in Kecskemét (1861-1863) is an outstanding product of romantic church architecture in Hungary. Very little is known of the circumstances of construction because the congregation’s archives perished. A comprehensive project of the National Scientific Research Fund (OTKA) conducted an exploratory research as a result of which the construction of the church, its architectural values and effect can be reinterpreted. Several attempts have been made to trace and evaluate the Central European analogies of the church, which were found in the sphere of Viennese historicism, first of all within the influence of Theophil Hansen’s architecture. The centralized spatial layout of the Kecskemét church adopts one of the fundamental ground-plans of Protestant church architecture, which was gradually pushed into the background amidst attempts to formulate the normative definition of “christian” style church architecture in the second half of the 19th century. The design of the church displays the influence of the Schinkel School, first of all through the obvious parallels in the Prussian Lutheran pattern collection edited by Karl August Soller. As regards Ybl’s romantic output, the analysis of the building enables scholarship to interpret the organically interlaced tendencies of adaptation and invention. It was built after the parish church in Fót; while in the latter the multiple effects of European precedents and analogies can be explored, in the Kecskemét church — and several other buildings — the Schinkel legacy characterizing Protestant church architecture can be observed. The church represents an important type of the church architecture of Hungarian romanticism with repercussions in the early 20th century as well.
