A robotsebészet története mindössze 22 évvel ezelőtt kezdődött. A cikk röviden áttekinti a robotika és a robotsebészet történetét, tárgyalja a da Vinci telemanipulátor-rendszert, valamint néhány más kereskedelmi és kísérleti robotsebészeti fejlesztést, és hangsúlyozza a virtuális realitás alapú sebészeti és robotsebészeti szimuláció fontosságát. A robotsebészetnek megvan a maga helye a következő koncepciók keretében: 1. komputerrel támogatott sebészet, 2. komputert integráló sebészet, 3. sebészeti automatizáció, 4. sebészeti rendszerintegráció és 5. mesterséges intelligencia.
