Az elmúlt két évtizedben az emlő onkológiai sebészete számos tekintetben megváltozott. Ennek az okai elsősorban az úgynevezett biológiai szemléletű gyógyítás, a daganatszűrés, a sebészeti technológiai fejlődés és a minőségbiztosítási elvek mindennapos használata. Egy újabb paradigmaváltásnak vagyunk tanúi, amelynek lényege, hogy a maximálisan radikális kezelést a minimális, de elégséges sebészi kezelési koncepció váltja föl. A sebészet mint szakma nemhogy le-, hanem egyre inkább felértékelődik, és továbbra is meghatározó az emlőrák gyógyításában.
