A primer post partum haemorrhagia a szülészeti vérzések leggyakoribb és legsúlyosabb formája. A megszületést követő 24 órán belül 500 ml mennyiséget meghaladó vérzés esetén beszélünk elsődleges post partum vérzésről. Két fokozata ismert, 500–1000 ml vérveszteség esetén enyhe formáról, több mint 1000 ml vérveszteség esetén súlyos vérvesztésről van szó. A súlyos vérveszteség is kétféle lehet: közepes (1000–2000 ml), és életveszélyes (több mint 2000 ml). A közlemény elsősorban a primer post partum vérzésről ad átfogó információt a lehetséges kockázati faktorok, esetleges megelőzés, korai felismerés és adekvát, életmentő kezelés tekintetében. Szekunder post partum vérzés esetén a 24 órán túl, a gyermekágyban fellépő szülőcsatornán keresztül történő vérzésről van szó. Ezek leggyakoribb okai a méhűri fertőzések, a méhlepényrész visszamaradása, az elégtelen méhösszehúzódás és a malignitás. Tekintve a kórkép drámai és tragikus következményeit, továbbá azt a tényt, hogy előrejelzése nem lehetséges, a kórkép felismerése, kezelése minden gyakorló szülész számára elengedhetetlen, fel kell készíteni minden gyakorló szakembert az esetlegesen bekövetkező post partum vérzés gyors és precíz diagnosztikájára és az anyai élet megmentésének valamennyi lehetőségére.
