A fotodinámiás terápia bizonyos hámeredetű bőrdaganatok terápiájában evidencián alapuló kezelésnek számít. A bőrgyógyászati klinikai gyakorlatban fotodinámiás kezelés során általában exogén fényérzékenyítő molekulát visznek fel a bőrfelületre, majd bizonyos inkubációs idő után a fényérzékenyítőből képződött protoporfirin IX-et megfelelő hullámhosszúságú fénnyel gerjesztik. A protoporfirin IX alapállapotba való visszatérése közben reaktív oxigéngyökök keletkeznek, ez sejtpusztulást eredményez a gyorsan osztódó sejtekben. A gerjesztett protoporfirin IX fluoreszcenciáját azonban a diagnosztikában is ki lehet használni. Ultraibolya fényben a fénykárosodott vagy neoplasztikus szövetek korallvörös fluoreszcenciát mutatnak, amely élesen elkülönül a környező szövetek sokkal gyengébb fluoreszcenciájától. Ez a módszer a tumorhatárok pontos meghatározása céljából műtéti beavatkozások megtervezésére vagy fotodinámiás kezelés utáni kontrollvizsgálat alkalmával a remisszió megítélésére használható.
