Az emberi daganatok mintegy 20%-ában bizonyítható valamilyen fertőző virális ágens kóroki szerepe. A Merkel-sejtes carcinoma ritka, igen agresszív, bizonytalan eredetű, vélhetően a hám stratum basale rétegéből kiinduló daganat. Elsősorban az időseket és az immunszuppresszált személyeket érinti, többnyire a napfénynek kitett bőrterületeken, különösen a fej-nyaki régiókon jelentkezik. Gyakorisága rohamosan növekszik, nemritkán differenciáldiagnosztikai problémát okoz. A Merkel-sejtes carcinomákból 2008-ban egy DNS-polyomavírust (Merkel-sejtes polyomavírus) sikerült azonosítani, amely megnyitotta az utat a daganat valódi kóroki hátterének feltárásához. Az elváltozás fertőző – virális – kóreredete szemléletváltást eredményez a patogenezis és remélhetőleg majd a kezelés területén is. Az ismeretek hazai klinikai gyakorlatba való mielőbbi átkerülése érdekében vállalkoztak a szerzők a Merkel-sejtes carcinoma és az első emberi daganatkeltő polyomavírus, a Merkel-sejtes polyomavírus összefoglalására.
