A szerzők egy beteg kórlefolyásának ismertetése kapcsán taglalják a Hashimoto-encephalopathia irodalmát. A betegség kezdődhet fokális indulású, majd generalizálódó epilepsziás görcsrohamokkal vagy más góctünetekkel, de jelentkezhet kognitív hanyatlással vagy színes pszichiátriai képpel is. A thyreoidea-peroxidáz ellenes és/vagy a thyreoglobulin-ellenes antitestek szintje emelkedett a szérumban. Kortikoszteroidra általában jó terápiás válasz észlelhető. Sok esetben nem ismerik fel a kórképet. Ezért ismeretlen okú encephalopathia tünetei mellett pozitív személyes vagy családi pajzsmirigy-anamnézis esetén (vagy még annak hiányában is) célszerű a pajzsmirigyellenes autoantitestek meghatározása.
