Az egyre növekvő volumenű nemzetközi turizmus egyik legfontosabb közlekedési eszköze a repülés. A növekvő számú utazók között értelemszerűen megnő a krónikus betegségben, elsősorban a cardiopulmonalis betegségben szenvedő utazók száma. Az utazás előtti tanácsadás feladata az utazók hypoxiatűrő képességének felmérése, és annak meghatározása, hogy milyen mértékben és formában szükséges az út alatt oxigénpótlás, illetve melyik beteg az, aki egyáltalán nem utazhat. E kérdések eldöntéséhez szükséges a szervezet kabinkörülmények okozta élettani változásainak felelevenítése, a döntéshez szükséges vizsgálatok és az azoktól várható információk ismerete. Ha a betegség akut fellángolása miatt az utazó hazaszállításra szorul, ugyancsak fontos információ a repülőgépes hazaszállítás alatti oxigénterápiás lehetőségek ismerete és a hazaszállítás lebonyolításának bemutatása.
