Az Európai Unió Tanácsának ajánlása nyomán csaknem minden országban született kormányzati szándéknyilatkozat a citológiai vizsgálatot alkalmazó méhnyakszűrés bevezetéséről, a végrehajtásban azonban jelentős különbségek vannak. A fejlett országok többsége a nemzetközi szakmai szervezetek által ajánlott szervezett szűrési modellt országosan alkalmazza. Némely országban az alkalomszerű szűrést végzik. A szűrési stratégia (életkor, szűrések közötti intervallum), valamint a céllakosság lefedettsége és a részvétel mutatói országonként változóak. Számos kesvésbé fejlett kelet-közép- és dél-európai osrszágban a szűrőtevékenység a tervezés szakaszában van. Magyarországon az átmenet a hagyományos „nőgyógyászati rákszűrésből” az ajánlott szervezett méhnyakszűrésbe folyamatos. A védőnők bevonásától további javulás várható. Orv.
