The article introduces one of the ‘orphans’ of the Hungarian epidemiological literature of eating disorders: Athletes, who are considered high-risk population, are outstandingly important in the prevalence of eating disorders due in part to the increased pressure for performance and in part to the very precisely limited body weight. Objective: By surveying the international literature of the recent 10 years, have a look at the notions of anorexia athletica and female athlete triad, and explore the new knowledge relating to it. Methods: Reckoning and comparative analysis of the available international epidemiological data. Results: The base notions have become more precise: of the signs of anorexia athletica, the disorder of body image is the least characteristic, and the increased pressure for performance is the most characteristic one. The numeric data of recent epidemiologic studies show smaller standard deviations: a prevalence of 20 to 25% for eating disorders instead of the former 15 to 62%; and 25 to 30% for amenorrhoea instead of 3.4 to 66%; as well as 2 to 20% for osteoporosis have been demonstrated. Female athlete triad has got a new interpretation: the concomitant occurrence of eating disorder and the consequent menstruation dysfunction is significant. Conclusions: There is a well-known correlation between excessive physical activity and eating disorder: the diagnostic system of conditions for the latter includes the essential criterion of excessive physical activity used as a body weight-reducing manoeuvre. It is also true conversely: there is a high (23 to 25%) incidence of eating disorders among athletes, where the role of somatic complications is increasingly important.
