Akadémiai Kiadó signed the DORA Declaration

November 16, 2020

Akadémiai Kiadó proudly announces that – after a few months of careful preparation – on the 16th of November 2020 they signed the DORA Declaration aiming at a realistic, fair and unbiased assessment of scientific publications.

The DORA Declaration – also known as the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment – was accepted on the 16th of December in 2012, on the Annual Meeting of The American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB) in San Francisco, by the founding group of editors and publishers of scholarly journals. It is a collection of some basic principles about the evaluation of scientific research, together with several practical recommendations how to achieve them. It is formulated most accurately in the Declaration itself: "The outputs from scientific research are many and varied, including: research articles reporting new knowledge, data, reagents, and software; intellectual property; and highly trained young scientists. Funding agencies, institutions that employ scientists, and scientists themselves, all have a desire, and need, to assess the quality and impact of scientific outputs. It is thus imperative that scientific output is measured accurately and evaluated wisely."

During its nearly twenty years history, hundreds of individuals, universities, scientific societies, research funds, journal editors and publishers have expressed their commitment to its goals by signing the DORA Declaration. Following big publishing houses like Springer or Cambridge University Press, now also Akadémiai Kiadó managed to join the supporters. In Hungary, Akadémiai Kiadó is the second organisation on the list after the Hungarian Educational Research Association.

Prior to signing the DORA Declaration, in order to meet its criteria, Akadémiai Kiadó introduced many new features on the web pages of its journals and of the individual articles. On the journal level, a plethora of scientometric parameters has been collected and displayed, together with a list of the most cited articles in the history of the journal (according to Crossref). This is accompanied by information about the operation of the journal, e.g. its acceptance rate. On the level of the individual articles, one can follow how many readers have opened or downloaded the paper; and all citing articles can be listed.

Akadémiai Kiadó is deeply committed to research integrity and ethical publication. We strongly believe that with signing the DORA Declaration – and in particular with the inventions preceding it – an important step was made for supporting these values.
