Abstract

Copper monoxide (CuO) was successfully obtained by microwave-assisted hydrothermal method, using different conditions—in a solution without base, in a solution alkalinized with NaOH or with NH4OH. The powders were analyzed by thermal analysis (TG/DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy, UV–Visible spectroscopy, and scanning electronic microscopy. XRD results showed that CuO was obtained with monoclinic structure and without secondary phases. Thermal analysis and infrared spectra indicated the presence of acetate groups on the powder surface. TG curves also showed a mass gain assigned to the Cu(I) oxidation indicating that a reduction possibly occurred during synthesis. The high and broad absorption band in the UV–Vis spectroscopy from 250 to 750 nm indicated the coexistence of Cu(II) and Cu(I), confirming the Cu(II) reduction, inside the CuO lattice. It was also possible to confirm the Cu(II) reduction by a displacement of the Me–O vibration bands observed in the IR spectra at around 500 cm−1.

Abstract

In the present work, results from a survey on mercury concentration in sediments and soils from a gold mining area along the Vila Nova river, in Amapá State, Brazil, are presented. These values were compared with those from the Igarapé Pedra Preta basin, an area unaffected by mining activities. Total mercury contents were determined in the muddy (silt+clay) fraction of the sediments and in the <2 mm fraction of the soils using radiochemical neutron activation analysis (RNAA). The detection limit of the method was 54 µg·kg–1 for soils and 14 µg·kg–1 for sediments when 200 mg of sample were analysed. The Hg results obtained from a comparison between our current method (RNAA) and CV AAS are also presented. Mercury levels showed to be very high in the soils and sediments collected in the Vila Nova river (up to 2 mg·kg–1) when compared to background values (0.3 mg·kg–1) for this region. An enrichment factor was calculated, using Al as a normalizing factor. It showed values up to 8 in sediments of the Vila Nova river basin, indicating a relatively high degree of pollution as compared to the values of about 1 for the samples of the Igarapé Pedra Pretra basin.

Abstract

Examples of the application of k 0 standardized instrumental neutron activation analysis (k 0 -INAA) to aerosols and biological monitors in the last 10 years at Instituto Tecnológico e Nuclear (ITN) are given. As an analytical technique, INAA, in association with the k 0 method was applied to these materials in four different projects, aiming at monitoring concentrations of heavy metals and others elements in the atmosphere in the Portuguese territory. In these studies we analysed the lichen Parmelia sulcata Taylor and olive tree bark as monitors as well as aerosol samples. For each project some representative results are presented, followed by a discussion of the application of this technique to environmental studies.

Thermogravimetry, derivative thermogravimetry (TG, DTG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), were used to study the thermal behaviour of mefenamic acid, ibuprofen, acetaminophen, sodium diclofenac, phenylbutazone, dipyrone and salicylamide. The results led to thermal stability data and also to the interpretation concerning the thermal decomposition.

Abstract

Hookworm-related cutaneous larva migrans (Hr-CLM) is caused by animal hookworm larvae migrating in the human epidermis where they elicit an inflammatory response. This study describes the immunological profile in Hr-CLM patients.

In 77 Hr-CLM patients from Manaus, Brazil, peripheral eosinophils were counted, and serum concentrations of total immunoglobulin E (IgE) and selected cytokines were determined by ELISA before and after treatment with ivermectin. Controls included patients’ household members (endemic controls), non-endemic Brazilian and Japanese individuals.

Eosinophil counts and total IgE in Hr-CLM patients were higher than in controls and correlated with disease severity. Concentrations of interleukin (IL)-4, IL-5, IL-6, and IL-10 were higher in Hr-CLM patients than in endemic controls (p < 0.001) while no differences were detected for interferon (IFN)-γ, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, IL-1β, IL-2, or transforming growth factor (TGF)-β. Following ivermectin treatment, numbers of eosinophils and concentrations of IL-4, IL-5, and IL-10 decreased whereas IgE, IFN-γ, and TGF-β concentrations increased. The IL-5/IFN-γ ratio declined from 5.9 (interquartile range [IQR] 0.8–31.6) before to 0.1 (IQR 0.05–0.2; p = 0.001) after treatment.

Thus, although an impact of other infections on the immune parameters determined cannot be excluded, Hr-CLM in endemic areas is associated with eosinophilia and elevated cytokine levels, particularly of IL-5 and IL-10, which decrease following ivermectin treatment.

Abstract

Thermal behavior of rare earth nitrate complexes with 2-azacyclononanone (AZA) with Ln(NO3)3·3(AZA) composition (where Ln=Gd, Er and Ho) was analyzed in kinetic point of view. Kinetic parameters were calculated from thermogravimetric data. All obtained results were similar. The first decomposition step was representative to the loss of ligand and the residue was essentially Ln2O3. Furthermore, a reaction path was proposed for the thermal decomposition of the Ln(NO3)3·3(AZA).

Abstract

Although significant increases in gaming may not always be beneficial, exergames (a new generation of video games also known as exergaming or active video games) appear as an alternative, feasible, attractive, and safe way to perform physical exercise for most clinical and nonclinical populations. Therefore, it is important to recognize that exergames can be considered a useful tool for coping with the COVID-19 outbreak and the recommended social distancing period.
