The basic institutions and legal frames of a market economy were established quite quickly after the regime change in East-Central Europe, including Hungary. But there has been a much slower change in the behaviour of economic actors. The purpose of the research was to show the extent to which the competitive attitude and the cooperative behaviour both essential to market economies have developed in the nearly two decades since the regime change.* Are the actors in the economy capable of a positive response to the appearance of foreign competitors, or has the old, anti-competitive attitude still been prevailing? How is the behaviour of the competitors influenced by state intervention? The answers to these questions are based on 71 semi-structured interviews and on their comparison to the data of some international surveys. In the paper we were searching for links between the picture developing from the interviews and the age of the interviewees, the market position and the size of their firms.

The blowfly Lucilia sericata (Meigen, 1826) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) is the primary agent of cutaneous myiasis of sheep in northern Europe, southern Africa, Australia and New Zealand. As the application of chemicals has several disadvantages, alternative control measures of traumatic myiasis of livestock must be developed. In this study, the use of entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) as potential biocontrol agents against second instar larvae of Lucilia sericata was considered. The following nematode species were tested: Heterorhabditis bacteriophora (IS 5, HHU 1, Hmo1, HNC 1, HAZ 36, Hbrecon, HHU 2, HAZ 29, HHP 88, HHU 3, HHU 4 and HGua), Steinernema intermedia, NC513 strain of S. glaserii, S. anomali, S. riobrave, Steinernema sp. and 5 strains of S. feltiae (22, Vija Norway, HU 1, scp, and IS 6). None of the examined EPN species or strains showed larvicidal efficacy at 37°C (no killing effect was observed in the case of the two heat-tolerant strains - H. bacteriophora and S. feltiae) against L. sericata larvae. At lower temperatures (20°C and 25°C) only strainsof S. feltiae were found to be active. The overall odds ratios calculated for L. sericata maggots to contract S. feltiae nematode infection show significant (p < 0.05) effect only in the case of strains HU 1, 22 and IS 6. In the case of strains HU 1 and 22 parasitic forms of S. feltiae could be detected in the dead larvae of L. sericata. Strain IS 6 (and also Vija Norway at 20°C) penetrated and killed fly larvae, but only adult forms of the nematode occurred in the cadavers.

Abstract  

The glenohumeral joint is not a classical mass bearing joint, the treatment of primary osteoarthritis is conservative. In all other cases, when the arthritis is associated with unbalance of the soft tissues, the treatment solution of this pathology is arthroplasty. The purpose of this study was to examine the altered metabolism in human degenerated cartilage of the shoulder joint. With the rise of temperature an endothermic reaction was observed in all cases. The use differential scanning calorimetry as part of thermal analysis was a reliable method for differentiating normal hyaline cartilage from degenerated samples.

Abstract  

The purpose of this study was to further characterize the altered metabolism spondylolisthesis that promotes disease progression. Degenerative human cartilage (intervertebral disc, facet joint and vertebral end-plate) was obtained during 15 posterior lumbar spine interbody fusion procedures performed at the University of Szeged. The thermal properties of samples were determined by differential scanning calorimetry (Mettler-Toledo DSC 821e). Greatest change in the enthalpy was observed in the intervertebral disc samples: −1600.78 J g−1. Denaturation caused by heating in the normal human hyaline cartilage needed −1493.31 J g−1 energy. Characterization of the altered metabolism that promotes disease progression should lead to future treatment options.

Abstract  

During recent years, knowledge of rheumatoid arthritis has increased, and management of the disease has improved. A limited number of papers have been published before on the subject of thermal analysis of degenerative cartilage but rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has not been studied previously. A new protocol had to be established before the investigation. The purpose of this study was to further characterize the altered metabolism in human RA cartilage that promotes disease progression. Previously, these methods have not been used for this purpose. The use of thermal analysis could be an effective method for controlling the relationship between biomarkers and disease progression.

Abstract  

Osteoarthritis, although classically conceived of as a degenerative consequence of aging, is a disease with an increasingly well-characterized molecular pathophysiology. Pathologic changes in cartilage composition and molecular organization, as well as elevated water content, alter the exquisite balance of biomechanical properties. Much of what is known about changes in the extracellular matrix in osteoarthritis comes from animal models. Previously, thermogravimetric methods have not been used for compositional thermoanalytical study of normal and degenerative human hyaline cartilage. For this reason the research group established a sufficient new thermogravimetric protocol, which proved water content elevation contributing to disease progression.

Reactions of binary and ternary alkali metal carbonate mixtures with aluminium oxide were studied by means of a derivatograph under different conditions. Reaction products were identified by X-ray diffraction.

Millet has attracted a great deal of interest due to its valuable agricultural, nutritional, and functional properties. In this study the aim was the investigation of millet usability in dry pasta products. Chemical, enzymological, and sensory parameters were measured and monitored in Triticum aestivum, Triticum durum, and millet containing pasta products during a 12-month-long storage period. According to our results, during the storage, millet had a strong effect on different parameters: because of increased acid value, the shelf life was reduced, and millet significantly influenced the pH value and the water soluble polyphenol content. The highest scores were measured in T. durum and T. durum-millet pasta samples in the sensory test, while the T. aestivum-millet mixture pasta got the lowest scores. Also in our experiment we tested how the drying temperature modifies polyphenol oxidase enzyme (PPO) activity right after drying and during storage. The samples containing millet flour had higher PPO activity in all cases after drying, while pasta made with T. durum had the lowest PPO activity. Our results showed that drying temperature has a significant impact on PPO activity.

Western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) is one of the most important pests of greenhouse pepper in Hungary. It has a hidden lifestyle, a short generation interval and a high reproductive rate. Due to these characteristics it is difficult to obtain an effective, environment-friendly and harmless control of the pest. Previous studies have shown that under caged plant conditions, the common crab spider, Xysticus kochi (Thorell) (Araneae: Thomisidae) is effective against western flower thrips. In this study, we examined some of the technological questions of the use of spider larvae.We investigated the necessary amount and number of applications of spider larvae under caged plant conditions. The efficiency of spiders at the whole greenhouse level was also studied. While the ratio of damaged surface of peppers treated with X . kochi was significantly lower than that of non-treated plants, increasing the amount of spider larvae did not improve the effectiveness of thrips control. Although whole greenhouse experiences showed a similar, significant decrease in the rate of damaged surface in the case of peppers treated with spider larvae, when compared to untreated control; the efficiency of spiders remained below the level of economic acceptance.
