Abstract  

Polyaniline/γ-Al2O3 (PANI/γ-Al2O3) composites were synthesized by in-situ polymerization at the presence of HCl as dopant by adding γ-Al2O3 nanoparticles into aniline solution. The composites were characterized by FTIR and XRD. The thermogravimetry (TG) and modulated differential scanning calorimetry (MDSC) were used to study the thermal stability and glass transition temperature (T g) of the composites, respectively. The results of FTIR showed that γ-Al2O3 nanoparticles connected with the PANI chains and affected the absorption characteristics of the composite through the interaction between PANI and nano-sized γ-Al2O3. And the results of XRD indicated that the peaks intensity of the PANI/γ-Al2O3 composite were weaker than that of the pure PANI. From TG and derivative thermogravimetry (DTG) curves, it was found that the pure PANI and the PANI/γ-Al2O3 composites were all one step degradation. And the PANI/γ-Al2O3 composites were more thermal stable than the pure PANI. The MDSC curves showed that the nano-sized γ-Al2O3 heightened the glass transition temperature (T g) of PANI.

Abstract  

Wood cribs free burning tests were conducted under ISO9705 hood. From the tests, the heat release rate of these cribs was grouped as 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 MW. This result was used to correct an empirical formula for peak heat release rate calculation. The correction achieves acceptable accuracy for the typical wood. The test result also shown heat release rate curve can be normalized by the total combustion surface of the wood crib. This can also be used to predict the HRR of wood crib of certain sizes and structures.

Research on extracted 90Y with di(2-ethylhexyl) orthophosphoric acid (P204) in lipiodol for liver cancer was made to evaluate the stability of extracted 90Y with P204 in lipiodol (90Y-P204-lipiodol) in serum of newly-born cattle and human’s blood. At first, P204 (extractant) was dissolved in lipiodol (organic phase). Secondly, 90Y was extracted to organic phase after adding 90Y solution into test tube with P204 and lipiodol in it. The extracting efficiency with 0.01 mol/l P204 could reach 99.4%. The stability of 90Y-P204-lipiodol has been experimented in physiological saline solution as preparation for further stability experiment. The result indicated that the extracted 90Y lost 0.02%–0.36% in physiological saline solution. The results of further stability experiment showed that loss efficiencies of extracted 90Y after adding newly-born cattle serum 1 hour, 1 day, 3 and 7 days are 3.38%, 3.12%, 4.29% and 6.62%, respectively, and loss efficiencies of extracted 90Y after adding human’s blood 1 hour, 1 day, 3 and 7 days are 2.55%, 5.91%, 7.88% and 5.63%, respectively. Our data also indicated that 90Y is the most possible radioisotope for being extracted with P204 in lipiodol to treat hepatocellular carcinoma, particularly in cases of unresectable liver tumors, since 90Y is available from several commercial sources in clinical quality. We conclude that the stability of 90Y-P204-lipiodol tested with newly-born cattle serum and human’s blood attained great results. 90Y-P204-lipiodol is a kind of potential and exciting pharmaceutical in inerventional therapy for liver cancer and we can carry on the further animal test and clinical trial.

Abstract  

By substututing99Mo for the Mo in the reconstituted MoFe protein, the nuclear quadrupole interactions (NQI) of99Mo have been measured using the perturbed angular correlations (PAC). Two well-defined electric quadrupole interaction parameters have been observed. The configuration of the M-Center of the MoFe protein is identified by the quadrupole couplign constant Q1(412(9)MHz) and the asymmetry parameter 1(0.49(5)). Other parameters, VQ2(1939(13)MHz) and 1(0.90(1)), may correspond to a deformation M—Center of MoFe protein.

Abstract  

Four ethylenediamine-N,N,N′,N′-tetraacetate complexes with Sb(III)-M-Sb(III) polynuclear structure (M=Co(II), La(III), Nd(III), Dy(III)) are synthesized. [Sb24-(EDTA)2Co(H2O)2]·5.15H2O is characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystal structure of [Sb24-(EDTA)2Co(H2O)2]·5.15H2O belongs to monoclinic system, space group P21/n, lattice parameters: a=6.9969(2), b=20.8705(4), c=10.8106(2) Å, β=90.031(1)°, V=1578.66(6) Å3, Z=2, M r=1007.76, D c=2.120 g cm−3, F(000)=1001, μ=2.323 mm−1, the final R=0.0235 and wR=0.0629 for 3480 observed reflections (I>2σ(I)). The powder X-ray diffraction patterns of the complexes are also measured. Elemental analyses, FTIR spectra, TG-DSC and DTA of [Sb2(EDTA)2Ln]NO3·nH2O are performed. FTIR spectra reveal that the antimony and other metallic ions were connected through the carboxylate bridges. The thermal analysis can demonstrate the complex formation of the antimony, other metallic ions and EDTA. The possible pyrolysis reactions in the thermal decomposition process of the complexes, the experimental and calculated percentage mass losses are also given.

The cereal endosperm provides nutrients for seedling growth. The effects of seed components in seedling establishments under salt stress are, however, not yet fully explored. In this study, 60 barley recombinant inbred lines derived from Lewis × Karl cross were grown in four different environments, and the seed contents of starch, total soluble protein, phytate, total phenolics, total flavonoids and total inorganic phosphorus were determined in the harvested grains. Seeds of each line from the four environments were also assayed for seedling growth under saline treatments from 0 to 400 mM NaCl. Root and shoot lengths after 7 days decreased with increasing salt concentration. Correlations between seed components and either root or shoot length were established across the four seed sources. ANOVA showed a significant environment/source effect for both seed components and seedling growth, although the latter was less affected by the seed-production environment. Modeling seedling length across multiple salinities for each seed source showed that the environment with the most saline-tolerant root-growth curve was that associated the highest seed phosphorus content. Correlations between seed components and seedling growth traits highlighted phytate and total inorganic phosphorus as key components for seedling growth under moderate salinities. Seed phytate contents benefited seedling growth, even at high salinities, suggesting an additional role for this seed component under stressful growth conditions, possibly linked to its potential function as an osmolyte source.

Abstract  

Cone calorimeter tests were conducted to investigate the flammability of glass-reinforced plastics (GRP) panels. The results gained from these bench scale tests were used to predict the time to flashover in the ISO 9705 room, which was partly covered by GRP panels. Östman and Tsantaridis’ empirical linear regression model and multiple discriminant function analysis (MDA) were used in the prediction. Three room-scale GRP fire tests were conducted in ISO 9705 room and the results were compared with the prediction.

Abstract  

Burning behavior of small-scale wood crib was studied by a serial of cone calorimeter tests. The heat release rate curves of these small wood cribs were different due to porosity factor and this shows that the control condition switches from one to another. The burning of some crib with small porosity factors was self-extinguished in fixed flow rate of air supply in cone calorimeter. These results were compared with Gross’s studies. The switch point of porosity-controlled and surface area controlled burning regime is different from Gross’s result.

Genetic structure of 142 parent lines of sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] was analyzed using model-based approach based on SSR markers. Forty-one selected from 103 SSR markers were used to analyze the parent lines, which generated 189 alleles revealed by each marker ranging from 2 to 11 with an average of 4.6 per marker. The polymorphic information content (PIC) value was 0.543 with a range of 0.089 to 0.850. All the parent lines were assigned to 7 subgroups, named Kafir, Kaoliang, Feterita, Shallu, Hegari, Milo and Durra. Parent lines without clear pedigree record were clustered into their corresponding groups, and genetic components of each line were estimated by Q-values. Information of this study would be useful for breeders to conclude their genetic background and select appropriate parents for germplasm improvement and hybrid breeding, and thus improve the efficiency of breeding programs.
