Commercial sodium caseinate isolate (SCI) was hydrolysed with either protease Subtilisina carlsberg - Alcalase 2.4 FG (purchased from Novo Nordisk), pronase from Streptomyces griseus, and papain EC 3.4.22.2 (both from Sigma) in a two-step process to determine the changes in the immunoreactivity of a-, ß- and ?-casein. Enzymatic hydrolysis of SCI was performed by pH-stat method. Hydrolysates were analysed using IEF, SDS-PAGE, 2D electrophoresis, FPLC-gel permeation chromatography. Immunoreactive properties of peptide fractions separated from the hydrolysates by FPLC were determined using dot-immunobinding and ELISA methods. The two-step process was observed to be effective in reduction of casein fractions immunoreactivity, however, allergenic epitopes were still present in all peptide fractions.

The authors’ aim is to reveal the reflection of Hungarian political and economic transformation in the public health nutrition during the last two and a half decades. Results of the four representative, nationwide dietary surveys completed in this period have been analysed for macro-, micronutrient intakes and overweight/obesity. The food consumption-related vital statistics provided by Hungarian Central Statistical Office were also analysed and compared. There are certain signs of favourable improvements: slight decrease of energy intake in females, growing share of plant protein, less saturated, more polyunsaturated fatty acid intake, less sugar. These findings are in parallel with some positive general statistical issues: the extension of life expectancy, lesser acute myocardial infarction, atherosclerosis and stomach cancer mortality, more vegetables and fruit, lesser lard, more oil consumption. On the other hand, there are several detrimental nutritional issues that influence the health status of Hungarian population: still high energy, fat and cholesterol intake, low complex carbohydrates, too much sodium (salt), insufficiencies in some vitamin, macro- and microelements intake. The number of overweight/obese people takes up fairly high level. The surveys somewhat revealed the role of nutrition in the health status of population and now a particle of possibility for its improvement is available

Abstract  

Data are reported on the development of a Cherenkov photometric producere, applying the basic principle of the method of LOWRY et al. At various amplifications and channel settings, linear correlations may be obtained between the logarithm of the protein content and the external standard activity or the channel ratio. The values obtained by Cherenkov spectrophotometry based on the Filin method display a linear correlation with each other with a good correlation coefficient.

Abstract  

The influence of -radiation on the electric properties of Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of partially iodine-doped poly-(3-hexadecylthiophene) and stearic acid in interaction with selected environment-polluting gases has been studied. CO2, CO and NO2 increase the LB films conductivity and NO has a tendency to decrease the electric conductivity. The influence of -radiation was expressive onyl in the case of CO2, whereas NO2 brought about degradation of the conductive polymer.

Abstract  

The diffusion of sulfur dioxide into partially iodine-doped poly (3-dodecylthiophene) and poly(hexadecylthiophene) has been studied. A direct dependence of the diffusion rate on the alkyl group lengths was ascertained. The diffusion rate could be increased by irradiation of the polymers.

Polgár 1:Iron Age settlement (3 rd century BC) . The Celtic settlement at Polgár was an open rural settlement. This type is generally considered to have agricultural features, which, however, cannot be supported by finds. On the contrary, the clay tuyere found in feature no. 100 and the soot layer that covered the floor of building no. 318 attest to industrial activities. The composition of the find material shows an absolute dominance of pottery sherds. According to the analysis, pottery vessels that can be linked with the so-called Scythian autochthonous population of the Great Hungarian Plain can also be found beside La Tène ceramic types. Accordingly, the survival of the former population and its amalgamation with the immigrant Celts can be supposed. This find situation is basically identical to the archaeological picture of the settlement uncovered at Sajópetri. This is reinforced by the fact that both settlements were established in the LT B2 period and both were peacefully abandoned by the inhabitants in the LT C1 period.

Abstract  

Formation of oxidizing and reducing radicals has been studied by pulse radiolysis of [Fe(CN)6]4––BrO 3 –CN system in ethylene glycol — water solvent mixture. Oxidizing ·BrO2 and BrO radicals formed by electron scavenging with ·BrO 3 were identified and their reactions were investigated. The reaction of hydroxyl radicals with ethylene glycol leads to formation of reactive radicals with reducing properties and of compounds which reduce slowly in dark the ferricyanide formed in the reaction of ·BrO2 radical with ferrocyanide.

Abstract  

The influence of certain gases on the properties of thermally treated and -irradiated Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of poly (3-hexadecylthiophene) and stearic acid has been studied. Both the heat and -radiation brought about some structural surface layer changes, leading to temporal variations of the course of the in-plane conductivity of films affected by the presence of applied gases.

We aimed to understand the effects of water stress on the alkaloid production in various developmental stages of poppy plants and the effect of stress on the alkaloids content in the capsules. Three stages of the life cycle of Papaver somniferum L. were selected in our studies: Rosette, Flowering and Lancing developmental stages. Four types of water conditions were examined: Control, Withdrawal of Water, 50% Water Supply and Inundation.The morphological monitoring, results of Relative Water Content and proline content were used as indicators of stress. The result of the measurements in poppy leaves show that the secondary metabolites dramatically respond to these stress conditions. The constant water supply was beneficial for the accumulation of alkaloids in the capsules.

Young adult male Wistar rats were treated, by gavage, with 80 or 320 mg/kg Pb 2+ (lead acetate), 0.4 or 1.6 mg/kg Hg 2+ (mercuric chloride) or both by combining the lower doses. For combination with alcohol, ethanol was added to the rats’ drinking water in 5 v/v %. After 12 weeks of treatment, electrophysiological recording was made from the somatosensory cortex in urethane anaesthesia. Evoked potentials obtained by stimulation of the whiskers were recorded. Both metals, and alcohol alone, increased significantly the latency of the evoked response. Alcohol seemed to abolish the effect of Pb, but not of Hg. Fatigue, calculated form the response amplitude, was increased by Pb and Hg treatment and this effect of Hg was reduced by ethanol. Evoked activity and its dynamic characteristics were sensitive to the complex neurotoxic effect induced in the rats and can provide a basis for developing functional markers.
