High ozone (O3) can cause great damage to plants. However, the effect of high O3 on nitrogen (N) absorption, distribution, and utilization in rice at different growth stages under different planting densities is poorly understood. In the present study, a conventional cultivar (Yangdao 6) and a hybrid cultivar (II You 084) with different planting densities were exposed to an elevated amount of O3 (E-O3; 50% higher than that of the control, C-O3) under a freeair gas concentration enrichment (FACE) system. N absorption, distribution, and utilization of the green leaves, stems, and shoots at tillering, jointing heading, and maturity were investigated. Results showed that E-O3 significantly increased the N content in the shoots of Yangdao 6 by 7.5%, 12.7%, and 19.6%, respectively, at jointing, heading, and maturity. Also, the N content in the shoots of II You 084 increased by 5.4%, 6.5%, and 8.4% at the corresponding growth stage upon E-O3 application. E-O3 significantly decreased N accumulation of II You 084 by 8.3%, 4.9%, 4.7%, and 19.2%, respectively, at tillering, jointing, heading, and maturity. Further, E-O3 had a decreasing effect on the N distribution in green leaves (p ≤ 0.05) of both cultivars, but exerted an increasing effect on that in the stems of both cultivars (p ≤ 0.05). In addition, E-O3 significantly decreased the N use efficiency (NUE) for biomass of the two cultivars in all growth stages. These results revealed that E-O3 could increase the N content in rice plants but decrease the N accumulation and utilization in both cultivars. The effects of E-O3 on N absorption, distribution, and utilization were not affected by planting density.

Saccharomyces cerevisiae MERIT.ferm was used as mono- and mixed-cultures with Williopsis saturnus var. mrakii NCYC500 in mango wine fermentation. A ratio of 1:1000 (Saccharomyces:Williopsis) was chosen for mixed-culture fermentation to enable longer persistence of the latter. The monoculture of S. cerevisiae and mixed-culture was able to ferment to dryness with 7.0% and 7.7% ethanol, respectively. The monoculture of W. mrakii produced 1.45% ethanol. The mango wines fermented by S. cerevisiae alone and the mixed-culture were more yeasty and winey, which reflected their higher amounts of fusel alcohols, ethyl esters and medium-chain fatty acids. The mango wine fermented by W. mrakii alone was much less alcoholic, but fruitier, sweeter, which corresponded to its higher levels of acetate esters.

The refinement of unsaturated fatty acids (UFA) from Hippophae rhamnoides L. seed oil was carried out by molecular distillation (MD) using response surface methodology (RSM). A central composite rotate design was used in order to optimize the experimental parameters: distilling temperature and feed flow. The optimal MD conditions were determined and the quadratic response surfaces were drawn from the mathematical models. The results suggested that the distilling temperature and feed flow significantly affected both the UFA content and oil yield in the two models. The optimum conditions for refining UFA were: distilling temperature 107.5 °C and feed flow 1 ml min−1. Optimal values predicted by RSM for the UFA content and oil yield were 82.38% and 62.59%, respectively. Close agreement between experimental and predicted values was obtained.

Abstract

Lifetime measurement in Positron Annihilation Spectroscopy (PAS) is applied to the study of free-volume collagen characteristics as a function of concentration. The lifetimes of positrons were measured by a conventional fast-fast coincidence system. All lifetime data are fitted in three components by using the computer program POSITRON-FIT and resolved. For each concentration, lifetime distributions were analyzed in order to obtain the different components, thus we have observed three components of which one long component τ3. This long lived component can be associated with a pick-off annihilation of ortho-positronium (o-Ps) trapped in free volumes of amorphous region. This investigation shows the potential of positron annihilation spectroscopy in the study of biopolymer microstructures.

Positron annihilation lifetime measurements of PMMA, PEMA, PiPMA, PnPMA and PnBMA were performed in the temperature range between 15 and 300 K, where , and relaxational transitions occur for these polyalkylmethacrylates. The variations of free volume size and content calculated from the longest lifetime component against temperature are correlated to the results obtained by dielectric, viscoelastic and dynamic mechanical relaxation data of the polymers. The variations of free volume sizes and contents, apparent free volume fraction and size distribution of the polyalkylmethacrylates are well correlated with the rotational transitions of side chains. The location of free volumes, in which positronium annihilates can be estimated near the vicinity of alkyl groups bound to oxygen atom of side ester chains.

The thermal decomposition characteristics of1,7-diazido-2,4,6-trinitrazaheptane (DATH) and multi-component systems containing DATH were studied by using DSC, TG and DTG techniques. Three –NO2 groups in the DATH molecule break away first from the main chain when DATH is heated up to 200C. Following this process, the azido groups and the residual molecule decompose rapidly to release a great deal of heat within a short time. In the multi-component systems, DATH undergoes a strong interaction with the binder of the double-base propellant and a weak interaction with RDX. The burning rates of the two propellants were determined by using a Crawford bomb. The results showed that the burning rate rises by about 19–66% when 23.5%DATH is substituted for RDX in a minimum smoke propellant. Meanwhile, the N2 level in the combustion gases is enhanced, which is valuable for a reduction of the signal level of the solid propellant.

Abstract

Conducting polyaniline/Cobaltosic oxide (PANI/Co3O4) composites were synthesized for the first time, by in situ deposition technique in the presence of hydrochloric acid (HCl) as a dopant by adding the fine grade powder (an average particle size of approximately 80 nm) of Co3O4 into the polymerization reaction mixture of aniline. The composites obtained were characterized by infrared spectra (IR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The composition and the thermal stability of the composites were investigated by TG-DTG. The results suggest that the thermal stability of the composites is higher than that of the pure PANI. The improvement in the thermal stability for the composites is attributed to the interaction between PANI and nano-Co3O4.

Abstract

The principle for the electro-generative simultaneous leaching (EGSL) is applied to simultaneous leaching of pyrite-MnO2 in this paper. A galvanic system for the bio-electro-generative simultaneous leaching (BEGSL) has been set up. The equation of electric quantity vs. time is used to study the effect of produced sulfur on electro-generative efficiency and quantity. It has been shown that the resistance decreased in the presence of Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans (A. thiooxidans) with the increase of electro-generative efficiency. The effects of temperature and grain size on rate of ferrous extraction from pyrite under the conditions of presence and absence of A. thiooxidans were studied, respectively. The changes in the extraction rate of Fe2+ as particle size in presence of A. thiooxidans were more evident than that in the absence, which indicated that the extraction in bio-electro-generative leaching was affected by particle size remarkably. Around the optimum culture temperature for A. thiooxidans, the bigger change in the conversion rate of Fe2+ was depending on temperature. The transferred charge in BEGSL including part of S0 to sulfate group in the presence of (A. thiooxidans) which is called as biologic electric quantity, and the ratio of biologic electric quantity reached to 58.10% in 72 h among the all-transferred charge.
