Abstract  

The thermal decomposition of Eu2(BA)6(bipy)2 (BA=C2H5N 2, benzoate; bipy=C10H8N2, 2,2'-bipyridine)and its kinetics were studied under the non-isothermal condition by TG-DTG, IR and SEM methods. The kinetic parameters were obtained from analysis of the TG-DTG curves by the Achar method, the Madhusudanan-Krishnan-Ninan (MKN) method, the Ozawa method and the Kissinger method. The most probable mechanism function was suggested by comparing the kinetic parameters. The kinetic equation for the first stage can be expressed as: dα/dt=Aexp(–E/RT)3(1–α)2/3.

Abstract  

In order to measure 182Hf by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS), a chemical procedure for separation of hafnium from tungsten has been developed by extraction chromatography. The extraction chromatographic behavior of hafnium and tungsten has been studied using tri-n-octylamine (TOA) as the stationary phase, HCl–H2O2 mixture and NH3·H2O as the mobile phase. The effects of H2O2 concentration, column loading and column dimensions are investigated. Hf and W with microgram amounts are successfully separated on a chromatographic column (Ø5 × 196 mm), on which Hf is hardly retained after completely eluted with 6 M HCl–1% H2O2 and W strongly adsorbed is then eluted with 3 M NH3·H2O. The decontamination factor for tungsten is 3.0 × 105 and the recovery of hafnium is better than 99% using a single column separation.

Abstract  

Excess molar enthalpies of binary mixtures for tributyl phosphate (TBP)+methanol/ethanol were measured with a TAM air Isothermal calorimeter at 298.15 K and ambient. The results for xTBP+(1–x)CH3OH are negative in the whole range of composition, while the values for xTBP+(1–x)C2H5OH change from positive values at low x to small negative values at high x. The experimental results have been correlated with the Redlich–Kister polynomial. IR spectra of the mixtures were measured to investigate the effect of hydrogen bonding in the mixture.

Glutenin subunit alleles at the Glu-D3 locus and their effects on dough properties, pan bread, and dry white Chinese noodle (DWCN) qualities were investigated using 106 winter and facultative wheat cultivars and advanced lines. Allele Glu-D3c (42.5%) was the most frequent glutenin subunit, followed by Glu-D3b (25.5%) and Glu-D3a (23.6%). Glu-D3d and Glu-D3f occurred in only three and six cultivars, respectively. The effect of Glu-D3 was significant forDWCNquality, accounting for up to 16% of the variation, but there were no significant differences between individual Glu-D3 alleles on dough properties and qualities of DWCNand pan bread. Interaction effects Glu-A1 × Glu-D3 and Glu-B1 × Glu-D3 were significant for DWCN quality and loaf volume. More work is needed to understand the effects of Glu-D3 variation on the determination of dough properties and end-use quality.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ability of Lactobacillus rhamnosus to bind patulin (PAT) in the buffer solution and apple juice. The binding of L. rhamnosus to PAT was reversible, which improved the stability of the bacterial complex. The ability to bind PAT can be enhanced with the inactivation of the strain by high temperature and acid treatment. Acid-treated bacteria had the highest PAT binding rate of 72.73±1.05%. The binding rates of acid and high temperature (121 °C) treatments were increased by 21.37% and 19.15%, respectively. L. rhamnosus showed the best detoxification ability to PAT at 37 °C, where the binding rate reached 50.9±1.03%. When the dose of inactivated bacteria powder was 0.02 g ml−1, the minimum concentration of PAT in apple juice was 0.37 µg ml−1. The addition of the L. rhamnosus inactivated powder did not affect the quality of the juice product and effectively bound the PAT in apple juice.

Abstract  

A microcalorimetric technique based on the bacterial heat-output was explored to evaluate the effect of Mn(II) on Bacillus thuringiensis. The power-time curves of the growth metabolism of B. thuringiensis and the effect of Mn(II) on it were studied using an LKB-2277 BioActivity Monitor, ampoules method, at 28C. For evaluation of the results, the maximum peak-heat output power (P max) in the growth phase, the growth rate constants (k), the log phase heat effects (Q log ), and the total heat effect in 23 h (Q T) for B. thuringiensis were determined. Manganese has been regarded as the essential biological trace element. Mn(II) of different concentration have different effects on B. thuringiensis growth metabolism. High concentration (800-1600 μg mL-1) of Mn(II) can promote the growth of B. thuringiensis; low concentration (500-800 μg mL-1) can inhabit its growth.

Abstract  

Polypropylene (PP) /ethylene-octene copolymer (POE) blends with different content of POE were prepared by mixing chamber of a Haake torque rheometer. The crystallization behaviors and crystal structure of PP/POE blends were systematically investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) and polarized optical microscopy (POM). The results showed that PP spherulites became defective and the crystallization behavior was influenced intensely with the introduction of POE. At the low content of POE, the addition of POE decreases the apparent incubation period (Δt i) and the apparent total crystallization period (Δt c) of PP in blends due to the heterogeneous nucleation of POE, and small amount of β-form PP crystals form because of the existence of POE. However, at high content of POE, the addition of POE decreases the mobility of PP segments due to their strong intermolecular interaction and chain entanglements, resulting in retarding the crystallization of PP, decreasing in the amount of β-form PP crystals, and increasing in Δt i and Δt c of PP in blends.

Abstract  

Radiochemical measurements of the concentrations of thorium and uranium isotopes were carried out for a total of 10 samples of hot springs, mineral springs and lakes collected in the vicinity of the Nevada Test Site. The uranium to thorium ratios in these water samples were found to be generally much greater than those in soils and in rainwater. The apparent230Th ages calculated from the230Th/232Th and234U/238 ratios for most of these water samples were less than 100 years.

Abstract

This paper examines the following questions: (1) Do early pioneer species have a greater impact on the survival and growth of different successional native trees compared to the shrub Rhodomyrtus tomentosa? (2) Do canopy treatments affect soil nutrients and light availability? (3) What is the mechanism underlying the interaction between nurse species and target species? Degraded shrubland sites (Heshan, Guangdong, China), under moist subtropical conditions were studied. About 1-year-old seedlings of Pinus massoniana, Schima wallichii, Schefflera heptaphylla, Castanopsis hystrix, Cryptocarya chinensis and Castanea chinensis were transplanted under the canopy of R. tomentosa, Dicranopteris dichotoma and in open interspaces without vegetation. Survival and growth were recorded from the first growing season after planting. Leaf gas exchange, water potential, soil physicochemical characters and irradiation were then measured. Canonical redundancy analyses (RDA) were used to evaluate the relationships between environmental factors and seedling survival and growth conditions. Both R. tomentosa and D. dichotoma canopy treatment facilitated seedling survival and growth either directly or indirectly. Irradiance/radiation was considered the most important resource (factor) for seedling growth in subtropical regions, however, soil nutrients and species are yet to be examined simultaneously with irradiance/radiation under field conditions. We conclude that early successional species facilitates the survival and growth of late successional species in subtropical shrublands. However, further predictions of successional trajectories remain elusive and are influenced by stochastic processes, including arrival order, shade tolerance, physiological character of the colonizing species and their competitive interactions.
