Results of work to transfer FHB resistance from Sumai 3 to modern Romanian winter semi dwarf wheat and chances to obtain transgressive segregation for resistance are presented. Four F2 populations of Sumai 3 top-crossed to advanced winter lines, with various levels of FHB resistance were included in the study.
The Senonian succession of the Szilvágy-33 well in the Northern Zala Basin was investigated in order to re-evaluate its chronostratigraphic subdivision and depositional history. The studied sequence begins with the Ajka Formation of reduced thickness and atypical facies. This is followed by the Jákó Formation with the interfingering layers of the Ugod Limestone, and then the approximately 300 m-thick section of the Ugod Limestone which is covered by the Polány Marl. According to the palynologic and nannoplankton investigations, the entire encountered sequence can be assigned to the Campanian. The layers assignable to the Ajka Formation contain the sporomorph assemblage known from the upper section of the Jákó Formation in the Bakony basins, clearly indicating a considerable temporal shift of the lithofacies during transgression. The late transgression demonstrated in the Szilvágy-33 well suggests an elevated paleotopography. In contrast to the former assumptions, the transgression may not have reached the Bakony region via the Zala Basin; rather, both sub-areas were invaded by the sea from the South Alpine pelagic basins.
Sirens became an essential element of the literary imagination in many European literatures in Romanticism and have remained popular ever since. Also, in Russian and Polish culture, the image of the dangerously alluring and transgressive female nymph called “rusalka” is omnipresent. In this paper, the authors use a comparative approach to trace the evolution of the “rusalka” motif from its creation in the Romantic period to its transformed (and often highly sexualized) use in present-day popular culture. From works written by Pushkin, Lermontov, Mickiewicz as well as Bal’mont and Gumilev (amongst others), we move on to contemporary actualizations of the motif in the music videos and lyrics of a Russian girl group (“Фабрика”), a Polish pop performer (Doda Elektroda) and a Russian folk-metal band (“Alkonost”). We argue that the centuries-old popularity of the “rusalka” motif can be ascribed to the theme’s core semantics of female transgression and adaptability that lends itself especially well to the sphere of pop and its remixing and resignifying practices.
Two segregating populations of doubled haploid (DH) wheat lines derived androgenetically from crosses ‘Svilena’ (susceptible) × A-38b-4-5-3-3 (highly resistant) and ‘Svilena’ × WWRN (moderately resistant to moderately susceptible) were characterized for resistance to common bunt. Disease incidence was evaluated after inoculation of seeds with a mixture of Tilletia foetida teliospores in two autumn sown field experiments. Two-gene model of inheritance of resistance in line A-38b-4-5-3-3 was suggested. The transgressive segregation in the latter population was indicative for a quantitative mode of inheritance. The DH lines were assessed for plant height, heading time and important yield components in a three-year field experiment without bunt infection. In both populations, transgressive segregation was observed for all agronomic characteristics. Although the disease incidence was positively correlated with most of the agronomic traits, genotypes combining bunt resistance with good yield potential were isolated from ‘Svilena’ × A-38b set of lines. These genotypes are valuable for breeding varieties designed for growing in low-input and organic farming systems. The two DH populations are suitable to be used for further studies on the genetic basis of bunt resistance.
In this article I am discussing some polemical passages in Tantric Buddhist works belonging to the 10th-13th centuries concerning the infringement of vows of celibacy when monks took initiation containing sexual elements. The passages follow the standard exegetical format of first presenting argumentation ( yukti ) followed by scriptural citations ( āgama ) purportedly supporting the position of the author. Whereas the argumentation part has been discussed in previous works by others, here I wish to draw attention to the scriptural matter used in justification. In our case nearly always the same quotation is used in a distorted manner. This is a sign that those in favour of justifying transgression of monastic rules were struggling to find appropriate substantiation. From this one could infer that the rites demanding such infringements in the case of a monastic person were most likely developments outside that community, and hence the origins of such innovations should be sought after among lay tantrics.
A study was conducted during 2008–2010, to estimate heterosis for yield component traits and protein content in bread wheat under normal and heat-stress environment by utilizing a set of 45 half diallel cross combinations, involving 10 diverse parents. Analysis of variance revealed significant differences for the two environements, whereas differences over the years were non-significant for all the traits. The pooled data over the years, exhibited highly significant differences for all the traits under both normal and heat-stress environments. The number of tillers/plant exhibited maximum degree of standard heterosis under normal and heat-stress environment (with value of 12.62% and 53.75%), respectively. In general, spike length (16.02%) and number of grains/spike (52.10%), showed higher magnitude of standard heterosis under normal environment than heat-stress environment, whereas number of tillers/plant (53.75%) and gain filling duration (43.68%) showed higher standard heterosis in heat-stress environment than the normal one. For grain yield/plant, 1000-grain weight and protein content, the number of cross combination showing standard heterosis were almost same in both the environments. The ten crosses, out of forty-five crosses, namely HD 2733/WH 542; PBW 343/UP 2425; HD 2687/PBW 343; PBW 343/UP 2382; PBW 343/HD 2285; WH 542/UP 2425; PBW 343/PBW 226; UP 2382/HUW 468; PBW 343/WH 542 and PBW 226/HD 2285 can be used to select transgressive segregants for normal as well warmer wheat growing areas. These ten combinations can be used by involving, the trait grain filling duration, tillers per plant, spike length, grains per spike, 1000-grain weight to improve grain yield for warmer areas. In all 45 cross combinations, six cross combinations were identified for better per se performance for grain yield as well as protein content under heat-stress environment. These combinations may thus be used for developing superior genotypes through fixation of heterosis are also supported by high SCA. Besides, results of present study also revealed ample scope for developing transgressive segregants involving some of these parents to develop high yielding genotypes in wheat suitable for heat stress environments.
Abstract
The No. 2 coal seam of the Witbank basin, South Africa, has a well defined geological layering that extends laterally over most of the basin. Palaeoenvironmental studies indicate that the No. 2 seam accumulated in two distinct depositional environments: glaciofluvial channels and regions represented by transgressive marine sediments. A systematically selected suite of samples was collected to study the distribution of trace elements both laterally and vertically across the No. 2 seam. A total of 121 coal samples were analysed for 15 trace elements by instrumental neutron activation analysis. Detailed trace element profiles across the No. 2 seam indicate that trace elements associated with the inorganic minerals in coal reflect vertical changes in the clastic source areas, environments of precipitation and accumulation or intrusive mineralisation in the post-peat swamp phases of the No. 2 seam. Trace elements associated with the organic matter in coal relate to changes in the palaeoenvironment or possible plant associations. Variation in the concentration of Br across the Witbank basin reflect regional changes in the depositional environment. In turn the chemical nature of the depositional environment strongly effects the distribution of some trace elements among maceral groups.
According to the common sense, experts, backed up by scientific methods, describe the “possible states of the world” in a value-neutral way. Then, in the political arena, delegates build on these proposals, but also consider values and interests. The present paper attempts to revise such an understanding of local economic development (LED) and argues that many of the deficiencies deriving from such a view can be remedied by deliberative participation, which is not merely a theoretical necessity, but also a practical possibility. With regard to the issue of public participation and deliberation, the paper identifies two main approaches in the LED literature: the “political” and the “apolitical”, of which the latter is mainly characterised by economic theorising. We take a closer look at the “apolitical” approach and demonstrate that in fact it is very much political. Therefore, we call for the transgression of the borderline between politics and expertise in LED, and suggest a joint democratisation of these interrelated terrains. We argue that deliberative participation is able to contribute to the quality of both the expert proposals and the working of the politics.
