Magyarországon a felsőoktatásban a 2005/2006-os tanévben még több mint huszonháromezren oktattak (KSH 2005: 141). Ez a szám 2006/2007-re huszonkétezerre csökkent (KSH 2006: 113), és a 2007/2008-as tanévben is alig emelkedett (KSH 2007: 117). A hallgatók között viszont ez idő alatt csaknem változatlan a nők többsége: a férfi hallgatókhoz képest 52–53% az arányuk (ibid.). A számok nem hazudnak. Kétségkívül volt hatása a múlt század felsőoktatási női egyenlőséget célzó jogszabályainak is, azonban az 1989-es rendszerváltást követő húsz év már a megújult jogi normatív háttérrel együtt, bár attól függetlenül, a társadalmi változások következményeként is kitermelte a női többséget a hazai felsőoktatásban.
