Abstract

This is an analysis of the scientific production of the Spanish research community compiled by the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) during the period 1983–1989 through indicators of publications (scientific output) that have been accepted, more and more frequently, as tools for decision-making. The percentages of the total number of articles per year are defined and the temporal evolution is shown of the orders of quality of the hypothetical journals that represent the whole production. A new indicator is used for comparisons between scientific subjects and thematic areas. Finally, mention is made of the spectacular growth of the Spanish scientific production in the period referred to, not only in quantity but also in quality through the indicators considered.

The stage directions of The Tempest Act IV have, as many other fragments of Shakespeare's works, been subjected to editorial intervention since the editors of the 18th century first altered the Folio stage directions. There are six directions in Act IV that show differences with respect to the original. All of them were initially modified by the 18th century editors both in the form of the direction and in the place of occurrence. Later editors maintained these new arrangements remaining in that form and place in all subsequent editions till the 20th century, when scholars such as Dover Wilson and Kermode went back to the Folio edition. This editorial behaviour has also been paralleled by the Spanish translators. In this paper we present all Spanish translations of The Tempest published in Spain and analyse the influence of English editors on the Spanish translations of this particular Act.

Abstract

A Spanish red mud was thermally characterized. Chemical and mineralogical composition were determined by XRF and XRD.The thermal events observed in the range from room temperature to 1300°C were related to the sample composition. The first mass loss step was related to free water content, while many of the other processes were related to dehydration processes. It was found that most of the decomposition reactions of hydrohematite, ferrihydrite, aluminogoethite, boehmite, silicates and carbonates were strongly overlapping. It was also explained the formation of silicates and calcium titanate, which presence was confirmed at 1000°C by XRD.

Abstract

Collaborative research in Spain in the field of pharmacology is studied. Co-authored papers in periodicals were one of the indicators used to quantify collaborative research results. Through Spanish publications of pharmacologists, collaborations between different institutions in the same city are mostly detected. Through foreign papers quite different networks were found, both amongst Spanish cities and with institutions in other countries. In case of Spanish pharmaceutical industry questionnaires were used to determine their links with other institutions, mostly through research projects.

Abstract

The publications by the Spanish scientists recorded in eight international databases in the years 1978 and 1983 are retrieved. Science indicators able to give a perception of the scientific productivity, the institutions involved, the habits of publishing in foreign or domestic journals and co-authorship are presented. The changes observed in these indicators in the two analysed years are examined and the trend in the evolution of the Spanish science is shown. The time delay in recording items by the databases and coverage of the Spanish journals are also studied.

This paper describes an unusual halo observed on the morning of 19 January 1787 from Caspe, Spain. The most striking characteristic of this phenomenon was a vertical tail of light that appears under one of the false suns.

The best alternative for reducing citrus production costs is mechanization. Machine vision is a reliable technology for the automatic inspection of fresh fruits and vegetables that can be adapted to harvesting machines. In these, fruits can be inspected before sending them to the packinghouse and machine vision provides important information for subsequent processing and avoids spending further resources in non-marketable fruit. The present work describes a computer vision system installed on a harvesting machine developed jointly by IVIA and a Spanish enterprise. In this machine, hand pickers directly drop the fruit as they collect it, which results in an important increase of productivity. The machine vision system is placed over rollers in order to inspect the produce, and separate those that can be directly sent to the fresh market from those that do not meet minimal quality requirements but can be used by the processing industry, based on color, size and the presence of surface damages. The system was tested under field conditions.
