Uterine adenoacanthoma, a subtype of primary endometrial adenocarcinoma, was found in a tissue specimen removed during ovariohysterectomy from an 8-year-old German Shepherd dog. Multifocal, benign squamous metaplastic islands were identified in the parenchyma of the malignant endometrial tumour. The tumour was highly infiltrative but did not metastasise to other organs. Detailed immunohistochemical analyses were carried out in order to characterise the immunophenotype of the tumour.

In this study, an experimental challenge was carried out by feeding Nero Siciliano pigs with acorn to evoke melanin-like pigmentation and support the hypothesis that it is caused by ingested material. Twelve pigs were studied, 6 fed with acorns and 6 fed commercial feed. At slaughter, all the animals fed on acorns showed black discolouration of almost all lymph nodes. The lymph nodes were normal in size and shape. Histochemical tests performed on tissues allowed us to identify and differentiate the pigment. Immunohistochemical staining for macrophage markers showed macrophages containing a variable amount of melanin-like granules. Our data, and the well-known steps of melanin formation, confirm that swine enzymes could act on phenolic substances found in acorns.

The recently identified claudins are dominant components of tight junctions, responsible for cell adhesion, polarity and paracellular permeability. Certain claudins have been shown to have relevance in tumour development. The aim of the present study was to analyse the expression of claudin-1,-2,-3,-4,-5,-7 and-10 in normal canine mammary glands. Samples from the inguinal mammary regions of 20 non-castrated, 1–13 years old female dogs were studied. Immunohistochemical analysis was performed on conventional specimens and tissue microarrays. The results of the immunohistochemical reactions detecting claudins in tissue sections were photodocumented. The immunoreactivity of claudins was quantitatively analysed on digital images using Leica QWin morphometry software. Intense membranous immunolabelling was found for claudin-1,-3 and-7, intense membranous with non-granular cytoplasmic immunolabelling for claudin-2, moderate membranous immunolabelling for claudin-4 and-5, and weak membranous immunolabelling for claudin-10. The occurrence of tight junctions was confirmed by ultrathin section electron microscopy. The available data suggested that claudins might be proteins preserved throughout the evolution of mammals. The results of our study support the concept that they are indeed preserved, since the same type of claudins, in identical distribution, could be detected in our canine mammary tissue samples as could be found in human mammary tissue.

The polysialylated, embryonic form of the neuronal cell adhesion molecule (PSA-NCAM) is known to participate in a whole series of synaptic rearrangements even in adult animals. The possible role of this molecule in neuroplastic changes of the adult rat somatosensory cortex induced by unilateral transection of the infraorbital branch of the trigeminal nerve was studied with PSA-NCAM immunostaining at light microscopic level. Two- and three-month-old CFY albino rats were sacrificied on days 1, 4, 6, 14 and 21 following operation and PSA-NCAM immunoreaction was examined at three levels of the vibrissa-cortex neuraxis, namely, in the principal nucleus of the trigeminal nerve, in the ventral posteromedial nucleus of the thalamus and in the somatosensory cortex. The lower levels of the neuraxis remained free of PSA-NCAM labeling, similarly to control, intact animals. However, a large number of scattered small neurons became PSA-NCAM immunoreactive in layers IV–VI on both ipsi- and contralateral sides of the somatosensory cortex from day 6 onwards, suggesting a possible transynaptic regulation of NCAM sialylation state.

Sensory neuropathy is common symptom of the diabetes mellitus and the prevalence of oral lesions is higher in diabetic patients. The distribution of substance P was studied immunohistochemically in streptozotocin induced diabetic rat's tongue. The morphological association of sensory nerves (substance P immunoreactive) with mast cells (nerve fibre-mast cell contact) was monitored. The substance P nerve fibre-mast cell contacts were very scanty in control tongue. The number of substance P nerve terminals and mast cells was significantly increased (p<0.05) in diabetes mellitus after 4 weeks of the treatment compared with the control tongue. The number of mast cell-nerve contacts was even more significantly increased (p<0.001) in diabetes. The distance between nerve fibres and mast cells was about 1 mm and very often less than 200 nm. In some instances, the mast cells were degranulated in the vicinity to nerve fibres. Increased number of mast cell-nerve contacts in neurogenic inflammation might cause vasoconstriction and lesions of the oral mucosa, so some disorders such lichen planus, leukoplakia and cancer might frequently develop in diabetes mellitus.

The pacemaker of the “biological clock”, the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) of the hypothalamus was studied in intact male rats for glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) a specific marker for astrocytes. Immunohistochemical reactions were carried out in winter (January-February) and in summer (June-July). In winter the GFAP-immunoreactivity of the SCN was found low whereas in summer it was high. Gonadectomy reduced differences. Since photic stimuli that apparently trigger the observed differences reach the SCN through identified neuronal pathways we conluded that the reaction of astrocytes is an indicator of seasonally altered neuronal function in the SCN.

A histiocytás sarcoma ritka, malignus vérképző szervi daganat. Tüdőben való előfordulása nagyon ritka. Az esetek kis száma, valamint a betegség klinikai és patológiai jellegzetességei miatt diagnosztikus kihívást jelenthet. Optimális kezelése egyelőre nem ismert, lokális esetekben – az elhelyezkedéstől és a mérettől függően – a sebészeti eltávolítás a komplex onkoterápia részét képezi. Egy 52 éves férfi beteg esetét ismertetjük, akinél a bal tüdőben centrálisan elhelyezkedő daganat miatt pulmonectomiát végeztünk. A szövettan histiocytás sarcomát igazolt. Az eset kapcsán rövid irodalmi áttekintést nyújtunk a betegség klinikumáról. Orv Hetil. 2023; 164(34): 1350–1357.

Absztrakt:

Az ectomesenchymalis chondromyxoid tumor a szájüreg igen ritka benignus lágyrész-daganata, napjainkig mindösszesen 93 esetet közöltek a nemzetközi szakirodalomban. Klinikailag csaknem kizárólag a nyelvhát elülső harmadában alakul ki, lassan növekvő, változatos nagyságú, fájdalmatlan, tömött, submucosus csomó formájában jelentkezik. A tumort szövetileg myxoid/chondromyxoid stromában hálózatos szerkezetbe rendeződött, kerek, poligonális vagy orsó alakú sejtek építik fel. Habár a megjelenés nagyban hasonlít a bőr és a lágyrészek myoepitheliomájára, a hisztogenezis máig nem tisztázott, azonban egy újabban megjelent, nagy esetszámot tartalmazó közlemény RREB1-MKL2 génfúziót igazolt az esetek 90%-ában, ami a daganat önálló entitását bizonyíthatja. A pontos szövettani diagnózis felállítását az immunhisztokémiai vizsgálatok biztosítják. Közleményünkben egy 62 éves férfi betegünk esetét mutatjuk be, aki a nyelvcsúcsán észlelt egy 3 cm nagyságú, fájdalmatlan, lassan növekvő csomót. A tervezett műtéti beavatkozáson nem jelent meg, csak 4 évvel később jelentkezett ismét, ekkorra a sebészi kezelésbe már beleegyezett. A daganat eltávolítását követően 24 hónappal panaszmentes, lokális recidíva nem észlelhető. Orv Hetil. 2019; 160(33): 1319–1323.

In the past few years a characteristic, often fatal disease associated with cutaneous lesions and nephropathy has been observed in several large pig herds and household pig stocks of Hungary. In addition to general symptoms and slight fever in several cases, the disease was characterised by cutaneous lesions occurring mostly on the ventral part of the thorax and abdomen, on the extremities and ear pinnae, and in the nasal and perianal region. In the acute phase, circumscribed hyperaemic, confluent, crust-covered areas were seen. Histological examination revealed necrosis of the epithelial layer and lympho-histiocytic vasculitis in the corium, here and there accompanied by thrombosis and fibrinoid degeneration. The kidneys were pale brown and harder to tear, with cortical petechiae in most cases. By histopathological examination, intra- and extracapillary glomerulonephritis accompanied by fibrinoid exudation was seen. Some of the renal tubules were dilated, others were atrophied, and in advanced cases proliferation of the intertubular connective tissue and inflammatory cell infiltration also occurred. Necrotic vasculitis was also observed in some cases. By immunohistochemical examination IgA, IgG and IgM, and in a single case C3 belonging to the complement system were observed in the pathologically changed skin areas and kidneys. By polymerase chain reaction (PCR), porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV-2) was detected. Bacteriological and serological examinations did not reveal infections of aetiological importance.

The aim of this study was to determine the expression rate of P-glycoprotein (Pgp), a multidrug resistance marker and the p53 tumour-suppressor protein in canine mammary tumours. A total of 30 tumours were examined in parallel to patient history. The tumours were allotted to four groups: tubulopapillar carcinomas, complex carcinomas, benign tumours, and other malignant tumours. A monoclonal mouse antibody (C494) was used for the immunohistochemical evaluation of Pgp and a polyclonal rabbit antibody for p53. We found that the intact ductal epithelium and connective tissue showed pronounced Pgp expression. The most intensive staining was detected in tubulopapillar carcinomas for both Pgp and p53. The expression rate of Pgp and p53 differed significantly between tubulopapillar carcinoma and complex carcinoma, and between tubulopapillar carcinoma and benign mammary tumour, respectively. The expressions of Pgp and p53 highly correlated statistically; therefore, both can determine malignancy in a similar manner. In the case of tubulopapillar carcinomas, more relapsed tumours occurred than in relation to complex carcinomas and other malignant tumours. Pgp expression rate was proportional to the probability of the tumour becoming recidivant postoperatively, as well. These results suggest that routine evaluation of Pgp expression in canine mammary tumours may be prognostically helpful.
