The best alternative for reducing citrus production costs is mechanization. Machine vision is a reliable technology for the automatic inspection of fresh fruits and vegetables that can be adapted to harvesting machines. In these, fruits can be inspected before sending them to the packinghouse and machine vision provides important information for subsequent processing and avoids spending further resources in non-marketable fruit. The present work describes a computer vision system installed on a harvesting machine developed jointly by IVIA and a Spanish enterprise. In this machine, hand pickers directly drop the fruit as they collect it, which results in an important increase of productivity. The machine vision system is placed over rollers in order to inspect the produce, and separate those that can be directly sent to the fresh market from those that do not meet minimal quality requirements but can be used by the processing industry, based on color, size and the presence of surface damages. The system was tested under field conditions.

Blueberry (Vaccinium spp.) cultivation has experienced a notable increase both for its good organoleptic characteristics and the nutritional and functional properties of this berry. The aim of this study was the physicochemical characterization of blueberry juices obtained from 55 blueberry cultivars grown under the same environmental conditions for 2–4 years. The results provide a broad and robust database, both for the number of cultivars and the periods of monitoring thereof, in order to cover different aspects of blueberry processing, and more specifically, production of juices. Blueberries belonging to V. virgatum cultivars showed the higher values of total anthocyanin content, total phenolic content, antioxidant activity, soluble solids, and pH, and V. corymbosum cultivars the higher level of titratable acidity. Results also showed a high variability among cultivars. Observed variations can be used in plant breeding and classification of blueberry cultivars, at least, at the species level.

Samples of sweet wines from the Canary Islands belonging to the Denominations of Origin of La Palma and Lanzarote islands were analysed in relation to chemical parameters. The main chemical parameters analysed demonstrated that these wines fulfil all the legal requirements, since the content of all components tested falls below the maximum concentration admissible. Applying techniques of multivariate analysis (principal component, discriminant and cluster analysis), a complete differentiation could be achieved between the wines according to the island of production using only alcohol degree and isobutanol, which are chemical parameters related to the elaboration process.

This paper reports on the probabilistic models for design of glass plates and the subsequent procedure to determine the allowable load of specified types of glass, as a proposal for the new Spanish code for structural glass. Moreover, a comparative analysis of the current national glass design standards, such as the American ASTM E 1300-02, the Italian UNI 7143-72, the French NFP 78-201-1 and the New Zealander NZS 4223 is presented.

We present a comprehensive study about the technical aspects of the application of focused ion beam (FIB) to the study of cuticles and compressions of fossil leaves.

The technique allowed us to cross section and image fossil coalified plant remains with a spatial resolution within the 10 nm range, far higher than any other method employed so far.

At various stages of the milling process, we observed significant gallium redeposition on the trench walls, particularly pronounced in the case of cavities. These highly unwanted artefacts can be greatly reduced, but not wholly eliminated, by lowering either or both the beam current and acceleration voltage; nevertheless, great care is needed when interpreting cross-sectional images.

The aim of this work was to identify new issues of the information demanded by beef consumers toward voluntary labelling. For this purpose, a total of 353 surveys were carried out to beef buyers who reside in three Spanish cities. To analyse the consumers’ demand information we used Chi-square tests. The results showed that information about sanitary and waste analysis and animal-rearing methods were the most demanded by consumers. Also, we found that there were clear links between the demand for information on the voluntary labelling of fresh beef and sociodemographic variables, such as gender, age, level of education, and the family income of the respondents.

The fruit quality parameters of Prunus armeniaca L. cv ‘Ninfa’ grafted on ‘Myrobalan 29C’ (Prunus cerasifera Ehrh.) and ‘Real Fino’ apricot seedling (Prunus armeniaca L.) were analysed in an experimental orchard under organic management. The study was performed between 2010 and 2012 in the province of Seville (SW Spain). Colour, fruit and stone weights, firmness, soluble solid concentration, and acidity were measured for fruit quality evaluation. Trunk cross-sectional area, main branches, and fruit yield were also determined. In general, ‘Myrobalan 29C’ rootstock produced fruit slightly larger in size and with a bigger weight. By contrast, apricots on ‘Myrobalan 29C’ had less firmness and a lower solid soluble concentration than on ‘Real Fino’. There was little difference in the colour, acidity, and stone dry weights. Trees on ‘Real Fino’ had larger areas of trunk and branches but no significant differences were obtained in relation to fruit yields.

Abstract

Mechanical properties of ductile materials are very sensitive to environmental conditions in particular temperature. The paper shows the results obtained in the simultaneous testing of 5182 H111 Aluminium alloy, S275JR Carbon Steel and F114 Carbon Steel specimens using conventional methods and thermography. The infrared thermography was used to quantify deformation localization zones, also to relate the temperature changes of the specimens, continuously recorded by thermography, with the load extension diagram. It enables to predict reaching the critical stresses which cause the appearance of fractures and to define the criteria for determining the maximum sample temperature alteration in the field of elastic and elastic-plastic strains. Infrared thermography was found to be an efficient tool for investigating the deformation and damage scenario under tensile loading.
