Ultrasonic wave attenuation within the flesh of intact greenhouse-grown pepper (Capsicum annum L.) fruits was measured during growth, to try to correlate this attenuation with quality-related physical properties: firmness, dry weight percentage (DW%) and total soluble solids (TSS) contents, and chemical composition. Twenty examples of each of three cultivars were picked weekly during a 7-week growth period, and weight, color, and ultrasonic wave attenuation were recorded, to nondestructively trace the changes during growth, and each intact pepper was then subjected to a relaxation test to determine firmness. Then, small samples of fruit flesh were destructively analyzed to determine DW% and TSS.During the 55th to the 65th day after flowering the fruits of all three cultivars reached their maximum weight, color started to change, and DW% and TSS started to increase rapidly; and the fruits were nondestructively examined by mechanical relaxation and ultrasonically. Principal component regression (PCR) analysis revealed significant (95%) correlation between ultrasonic attenuation, TSS and physical parameters. A TSS prediction model was developed for all three cultivars.

Chemical composition (moisture, ash, protein, fat, total carbohydrate, sucrose, fructose, glucose and maltose) of four types of biscuits and four gingerbreads were determined and moisture adsorption characteristics of samples were evaluated at 25 °C using the Novasina hygrometric technique. Generally, the GAB model gave the best description of the experimental sorption data; however, these findings were not statistically significant compared with the BET model. Gingerbreads absorbed higher amount of water (20–25 g/100 g on dry weight basis) at a w >0.70 in comparison to biscuits studied mainly due to higher content of sucrose and/or other simple saccharides. Monolayer moisture content evaluated by BET and GAB models were in general higher for the gingerbreads. Although the Novasina water activity meter is suitable for construction of sorption isotherms, in the lower range of a w values (i.e. <0.45) the water uptake is slightly underestimated.

Lithium cobaltate LiCoO 2 and Li-Mn oxides nanopowders are synthesized by plasma chemical method in RF-IC plasma flow. Plasma forming gases are air or nitrogen, additionally air is used as oxidizing and quenching gas. As-synthesized and annealed in air nanopowders are investigated by powder XRD, BET, DTA/TGA, SEM, TEM methods and wet chemical analysis; lattice parameters are estimated by the programme SCANIX. Evaporation of initial powder mixtures Li 2 CO 3 +Co with Li/Co molar ratio 1:1 or Li 2 CO 3 +(Mn 2 O 3 +MnO 2 ) with various Li/Mn molar ratios, subsequent quenching and condensation of products results in obtaining of nanopowders with SSA of 13-23 m 2 /g and average particle size of 67-95 nm. After synthesis nanopowders contain admixtures of lithium nitrate hydrate LiNO 3 ·nH 2 O by-phase because of plasma flow composition and air environment. After heat-treating at 600-1000°C pure LiCoO 2 , LiMn 2 O 4 spinel, Li 2 MnO 3 , LiMn 2 O 4 +Li 2 MnO 3 are formed with good crystallinity and average particle size of 70-240 nm. Prepared nanopowders can be applied as cathode materials for Li-ion batteries with appropriate electrochemical properties for high discharge rate.
