A study was performed to survey the virological prevalence of bovine viral diarrhoea (BVD) virus (BVDV) in cattle herds in Hungary between 2008 and 2012. A total of 40,413 samples for BVDV detection and 24,547 samples for antibody testing were collected from 3,247 herds (570,524 animals), thus representing approximately 75% of the cattle population in Hungary. Retrospective Bayesian analysis demonstrated that (1) the herd-level true virus prevalence was 12.4%, (2) the mean individual (within-herd) true virus prevalence was 7.2% in the herds having at least one virus-positive animal and 0.89% for all investigated herds with a mean apparent prevalence of 1.15% for the same population. This is the first study about BVDV prevalence in Hungary.

Distribution of K027, a hydrophilic, positively charged compound is monitored in the body of pregnant mice using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Intraperitoneal injection was done on the 18th day of pregnancy; the plasma and brains of the mother mice, placentae and the fetuses’ brains were dissected following 5, 15, 30, 60, and 120 min of treatment. Significant incorporation of K027 was found in the placentae and in fetuses’ brains relative to its levels in the mothers’ plasma and brains. This incorporation warns of a possible adjustment of dose of pyridinium aldoxime antidotes in case of pregnancy. Further studies with different gestational periods and animal models are warranted.

Absztrakt:

A szerzők egy gennyes meningitisben szenvedő férfi beteg esetét ismertetik, akinél az infekció hátterében a Streptococcus suis kóroki szerepét igazolták. A baktérium kolonizáló ágensként megtalálható különböző állatok (sertések, kérődzők, macskák, kutyák, szarvasok, lovak) felső légutaiban, tápcsatornájában, nemi szervein. A kórokozó elsősorban állatpatogén, de humán esetek is előfordulnak zoonoticus eredettel. A megbetegedés elsősorban szepszis, meningitis képében jelentkezik mind az állati, mind a humán esetekben. A betegség prevalenciája földrészenként igen eltérő, a legmagasabb Ázsiában. A megbetegedések kialakulásában alapvető különbség figyelhető meg az ázsiai, illetve európai és amerikai régiók között, melyet eltérő kulturális és étkezési szokások befolyásolnak. A baktérium megjelenésére hazánkban elsősorban foglalkozási megbetegedésként kell számítani, de a fellendülő turizmus következtében behurcolt esetek is előfordulhatnak. A kórokozó pontos mikrobiológiai diagnosztikájához elengedhetetlen a modern identifikálómódszerek megléte. A szerzők szeretnék felhívni a figyelmet erre a súlyos infekciót okozó baktériumra, ezért fontosnak tartják a szakirodalomban fellelhető ismeretek összefoglalását és közlését. The number of new drugs launched to the market is constantly increasing; however, the metabolism of many of them is still not fully established. The knowledge of drug metabolism pathways is crucial for the efficacy and safety of therapies and, in classical approach, requires the use of animals as well as human volunteers, but this kind of research is expensive and time-consuming. Therefore, nowadays, more and more biological and chemical in vitro methods are developed for the drug metabolism study. This review is focused on the photocatalytic degradation of chemicals and the application of this process in chromatographic methods of drug metabolism research. A theoretical background of photocatalysis and all its applications in a drug metabolism study were reviewed, and other in vitro methods that are actually used were summarized and discussed. Other analytical methods used in this area were also discussed and compared.
