Abstract  

Triphenyltin(IV) complexes ofN-acetylglycine,N-acetyl-L-leucine,N-acetyl-L-asparagine andN-acetyl-L-tyrosine were prepared by two methods and characterized by means of different spectroscopic methods (FTIR, multinuclear,1H,13C and119Sn NMR and119Sn Mössbauer). The spectroscopic data indicated that theN-acetylglycine complex adopts a trigonal-bipyramidal structure in which the monodentate carboxylate and the amide-C=O group are bound to the same organotin(IV) moiety. The other three complexes are linear oligomers in which the planar Ph3Sn(IV) is coordinated axially by a monodentate carboxylate and an amide-C=O from two different ligands. At theC-terminal end of the oligomer chain there is a tetracoordinated tin(IV) with a monodentate carboxylate as donor group.

The article deals with the distribution of three species from the genus Rosa in Slovakia. Field research, sampling and herbarium sheet revision at the Herbarium of Department of Botany, Faculty of Natural Sciences Comenius University (SLO) and the Herbarium of Institute of Botany, Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAV) showed new data on the distribution of Rosa pocsii Kerényi-Nagy, Rosa polyacantha (Borbás) H. Br. and Rosa zagrabiensis Vuk. et H. Br. in Slovakia. Detailed taxonomic description, distribution of selected taxa in Slovakia, a determination key and a comparative table of the sect. Rubiginosae are given.

Purpose: The purpose of the present study was to find a noninvasive way of detecting even smaller volume loss which is easier to carry out and possibly more precise than the currently used (mostly sphygmomanometer-based) methods. Haemodynamic and EEG measurements were carried out in simulated volume loss, involving blood donation and orthostatic challenges to assess adaptive responses and cognitive performance. Cognitive performance was assessed in an oddball task and changes of the evoked potential P300 were analyzed. Both haemodynamic and cognitive parameters were recorded in ‘pre-donation’ and ‘post-donation’ conditions for purposes of comparison. Results: Cognitive performance (as reflected by P300 changes) was found to be a poor marker of volume loss. Difference between the two conditions in none of the parameters reached the level of statistical significance (defined as p < 0.05) RR mean, baroreceptor sensitivity and pulse pressure were rather sensitive to the relatively mild volume loss (p < 0.01 between pre- and post-conditions). Conclusion: Our study indicates that traditional sphygmomanometerbased values can safely be replaced by values yielded by finger plethysmography, combined with brief orthostatic challenges and that P300 as a cognitive marker cannot be used to assess volume loss.

Frozen fillets of Atlantic herrings (Clupea harengus) were used to evaluate the effect of glaze with or without addition of selected herbal extracts on lipid oxidation and sensory properties during 8 months of freezing storage under −14 °C. Fillets were divided into four groups: control non-glazed group, glazed group without addition of herbal extracts, and glazed groups with addition of hawthorn (Crataegus oxyacantha L.) extract (0.3%) and agrimony (Agrimonia eupatoria L.) extract (0.3%). The antioxidant activity and total phenolic content in hawthorn and agrimony extracts, and their effect on lipid deterioration expressed as thiobarbituric acid reactive substances were measured. The results showed that the herbal extracts of hawthorn and agrimony are effective antioxidants and good sources of total phenols. Significant influence of herbal extracts added into glaze on the extent of lipid oxidation changes has been obvious within 4 months storage of herring fillets under freezing conditions. Finally, positive influence of glaze and herbal extracts on organoleptic characteristics of fish fillets was found.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the nutritional status of elderly belonging to one primary care office. Twenty-seven men and 26 women, all over 60 years, were involved. Nutritional assessment, anthropometric measurements were performed, serum proteins, lipid and iron status and haematological parameters were determined. Energy and protein intake was sufficient, but the distribution of energy with a high fat and low carbohydrate was inadequate. Iron, copper, calcium, retinol and folate intake was lower, whereas sodium, ascorbic acid and cobalamin intake was higher than the Hungarian recommendation. The prevalence of obesity characterized by body mass index or waist circumference was higher in women than in men. The percentage of pathological levels of lipid parameters was also higher in women. No iron deficient erythropoesis was detected, but high serum ferritin concentration as a marker of body iron store was determined in some cases.  General practitioners have possibilities to influence the nutritional habits of elderly, thereby reducing the incidence of obesity, cardiovascular diseases and stroke. Iron status of Hungarian elderly looks to be satisfactory, so supplementation without testing the iron status would be useless and harmful.

Abstract  

The effect of Xe+ irradiation and that of subsequent annealings on Fe/Sn bilayer have been studied by119Sn conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy. It seems that the effectiveness of ion-beam mixing is comparable to the thermal treatment of the bilayer.

Abstract  

Dibenzyltin(IV) complexes of carbohydrate derivatives were prepared and studied by Mössbauer and FTIR spectroscopy and by thermogravimetry. The Mössbauer studies indicated that the reaction between dibenzyltin(IV)-dichloride and sugar-type ligands led to reaction products containing tin(IV)-oxide. beside the dibenzyltin(IV) sugar complex. These two type of species were shown to be in weak interaction. Comparison of the experimental quadrupole splitting values with those calculated on the basis of the partial quadrupole splitting concept revealed the steric arrangements of the coordination sphere of tin(IV) in the sugar complexes.

Abstract  

A non-destructive activation analytical method developed for the determination of the axial concentration distributions of Al, Si and K residual additives in sintered tungsten rods is briefly described. A 14 MeV neutron generator is used to produce the reactions27Al(n, p)27Mg,28Si(n, p)28Al and39K(n, 2n)38K and the activities are compared with standards. A weighted least-squares fitting program is used for peak area determination of the scintillation spectra. A scheme of the irradiating and measuring arrangement with a pneumatic sample-transfer system is presented. The system is applicable to large-scale routine analysis and lends itself well to automation. The results of preliminary measurements with this arrangement are given.
