The goal of nuclear forensics is to establish an unambiguous link between illicitly trafficked nuclear material and its origin.
The Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Nuclear Materials Signatures Program has implemented a graded “conduct of operations”
type analysis flow path approach for determining the key nuclear, chemical, and physical signatures needed to identify the
manufacturing process, intended use, and origin of interdicted nuclear material. This analysis flow path includes both destructive
and non-destructive characterization techniques and has been exercized against different nuclear materials from LANL’s special
nuclear materials archive. Results obtained from the case study will be presented to highlight analytical techniques that
offer the critical attribution information.

Chlorobis/-diketonato/ oxotechnetium/V/ complexes [TcOCl/-dik/2, -diketone=acetylacetone, benzoylacetone and dibenzoylmethane] were newly synthesized using macroamount of99Tc. These complexes were further separated into geometrical isomers. Furthermore, an improvement of the yields for the syntheses of tris/-dike-tonato/technetium/III/ complexes [Tc/-dik/3, -diketone=acetylacetone, benzoylacetone and 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetone] was examined using Tc/III/-thiourea complexes as a starting material.
The idiom of the scales of justiceis commonly known and widely used. Iustitia can frequently be seen in different representations holding scales in her hand. The scales as a means or a symbol of justice (justness) or the administration of justice can be encountered in various places in Greek literature, one of its earliest instances being the Homeric Hermes' Hymn (Dikés talanta). According to these loci Zeus holds the scales of Diké, that is to say, the scales of justice in his hand. In the Iliad (23, 109-213) one may come across a scene presented in context, thus suitable for being more amply analysed, in which Zeus is pronouncing justice over the heroes using a pair of scales. In search of the meaning of Dikés talanta, this study tries to clarify the concept of law and justice (justness) in Homeric epic (I.), then by a structural (II.) and comparative analysis (III.) of certain lines of the weighing scene, decisive in the combat of Achilles and Hector, it formulates a few remarks on the origin and meaning of the concept of the scales of justice. One cannot claim that this idea of Egyptian religion had been transferred in its entirety into Greek thinking, but it is not surprising, as one can barely encounter an unaltered Egyptian borrowing in Greek mythological thinking. Nonetheless, some Egyptian influence, possibly with Cretan transmission, can be detected in the development of the Greek versions of psykhostasia and kerostasia. Pictorial as well as textual manifestations of such influence can be found on the one hand in vase-paintings, and on the other hand-undergoing a specific alteration of aspect in the form of kerostasia-in Homer, who paved the way for the scales of justice of Zeus and Iuppiter to become the symbol of Diké and Iustitia, and subsequently of the administration of justice itself.
Paleozoic black shales of the Saxothuringikum (Germany) with an average Corg. -content of 0.01 to 20 mass% were investigated with regard to the nature of organic matter. A special pyrolysis technique
(DEGAS) was used for a temperature resolved analysis of different hydrocarbons (HC) and the simultaneous detection of inorganic
volatiles during heating under vacuum up to 1450C. The presented data indicate three different forms of organic matter occurring
in the investigated black shales (bitumen, kerogen and pyrobitumen). Finally the influence of an igneous dyke intrusion on
the alteration of the organic matter was examined.
An accurate and simple method has been developed for the determination of Pt, Ru, Ir and other elements employing instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA). Nondestructive analysis has been carried out for the determination of these elements in different rock samples such as Dolerite, Dyke Dolerite, Country Basalt, Hyaloclastite, Trachyte, Ijolite, Spillite, Diorite and Lamprophyre from various locations like Daman, Tapti, Murud, Talasari, Ranala and Bassein in Maharashtra state. High flux provided by the CIRUS reactor (1×1013 n cm–2s–1) has been used for thermal neutron bombardment followed by radioassaying of the (n,) products on a HPGe detector coupled to a PC-based MCA unit.

This paper presents a case study to illustrate the role played by geologic structures in the design and construction of major transportation infrastructure, in a setting of moderately deformed Paleozoic sedimentary rocks in eastern Australia. It describes a complex development of folding, faulting and jointing that has resulted in significant inclination of beds, juxtaposition of strata and affected the weathering characteristics of a wide range of rock types. The sequence, which displays an upward transition from marine to terrestrial sediments, comprises an interbedded succession of conglomerate, sandstone, shale and erratic volcanics and crystal tuff. Unfavorable relationships between major excavation faces, inclined beds and jointing have resulted in problems with the stability of road cuttings. Also, the presence of faults and dykes at various scales has had a significant effect on weathering and rock strength. The paper demonstrates the importance of the choice of alignment at design stage, and how a basis of good structural interpretation and geologic mapping can be used to avoid problems during construction and issues with ongoing maintenance.
Magnetotelluric method (MT) offers opportunity to detect crustal fluids along faults due to their high conductivity anomaly. Supposing that fluids deposited minerals in the conductive fractures (faults, dykes) decreasing the resistivity, the high seismicity in the area can be explained by the presence of these fluids. MT measurements were carried out in the period range 0.001–420 s crossing the Kalabsha fault (Aswan, Egypt) and Remiremont fault (Southern Vosges, France). In these work we detect geoelectrical resistivity anomalies of the Earth’s crust and link them to local seismic activity. Seismic events having magnitude (M<5) are found along fault zones in Kalabsha and Remiremont. The goals of our measurements are various. We would like to determine the precise location of the active faults, to study the connection of the Remiremont and Kalabsha seismicity to the MT resistivity structures, and to support the idea of the influence of the fluid-bearing conducting faults in the Remiremont and Kalabsha areas to the earthquake. These applications afford the unusual opportunity to study the percolation of water into the faults system and its effect on the seismicity, to reveal geological structures and the stress field covered by thin Quaternary formations. Data are analysed by 2D simultaneous inversion of both polarizations. The resulting models are compared with the local seismicity map. Our MT model reveals the conductive signature of the fault, as well as geological and tectonic stresses prevailing in active regions.
