Abstract

Neutron activation analysis was used to determine the concentration of trace elements in 50 samples of orange, yellow, honey, green, blue and pink opals as well as 18 samples of colourless opals taken from a number of recognised fields in Australia, Peru, Mexico and USA. The results were evaluated to determine the relationship between trace element content and opal colour.

Abstract

The National Bureau of Standards has, for the past five years, been developing natural-matrix, environmental-level radioactivity Standard Reference Materials in large quantities to be available to users over a ten year time period. These materials have been found to be useful for the evaluation of radiochemical methods and analysis, as interlaboratory comparison materials, and as quality assurance materials. To date, six Standard Reference Materials have been issued: River Sediment, Human Lung, Human Liver, Rocky Flats Soil-1, Freshwater Lake Sediment, and Peruvian Soil. The concentrations of twenty radionuclides have been certified in these materials.

Abstract

The chemistry laboratory at the Peruvian Institute of Nuclear Energy (IPEN) has carried out a validation method for the samples of siliceous composition. At least seven variables affecting the robustness of the results were initially identified, which may interact simultaneously or individually. Conventional evaluation hereof would imply a massive number of analyses and a far more effective approach for assessment of the robustness for these effects was found in the Youden-Steiner test, which provides the necessary information by only eight analyses for each sample type. Three reference materials were used for evaluating the effects of variations in sample mass, irradiation duration, standard mass, neutron flux, decay time, counting time and counting distance.
