Switchgrass ( Panicum virgatum L.) biomass, which is of a good quality in the middle of summer, when cool-season grasses are unproductive, is a very important source of forage. This study measured the influence of the date of first harvest and cutting height on the first and regrowth yields of switchgrass cultivars Blackwell and Cave in Rock. The experiment was conducted in Blacksburg, VA, USA on a Groseclose-Poplimento soil to determine the influence of four dates of harvest and two cutting heights on the yield of switchgrass in 1990, and the influence of the treatments in previous years on the yields in 1991 and 1992. The first yield of both cultivars increased as the date of first harvest was delayed and the cutting height reduced. The regrowth yield of both cultivars declined as the date of first harvest was delayed. A shorter cutting height caused reductions in vigour and yield potential in the second year, whilst in the third year the harvested yield was only 40–50% of that obtained from previously unharvested stands.

A tanulmány a homérosi Hermés-himnusz néhány nevezetes szövegkritikai és értelmezési kérdésével foglalkozik. Az első fejezet a szandálkészítő jelenet (82–86) kapcsán Hermés leleményes tettének valódi indokát keresi, és megoldást kínál a romlott 86. sor javítására, a második egység a tettetési epizód összefüggésében a csecsemő isten színészképességeit vizsgálja, és javítja a szintén hibásan hagyományozódott 242. sort, végül az utolsó fejezet arra keresi a választ, hogyan alakul át Hermés a himnusz befejező részében ravasz tolvajból ihletett dalnokká, miközben mégis megőrzi eredeti tulajdonságait.

Abstract

The history of the works composed by Jesuits Fulvio Androzzi (1523–1575) and Marcin Śmiglecki (1563/1564–1618) and their translations into Church Slavonic as well as the so-called “prostaâ mova” are considered as an interesting example of the spread of Catholic works among adherents of Orthodoxy in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. Androzzi’s Della frequenza della communione (1579) was originally an essay on the preparation for frequent communion. Its two Polish-language editions by Stanisław Grochowski (Scieszka poboznego chrześcianina, 1600) and Szymon Wysocki (Skarbnica duchowna, 1600) served as a source for a concise funerary sample-sermon written in “prostaâ mova” which is found in the Vilna’s Orthodox Ritual (1621). An essay on theological and legal aspects of money-lending (usury) by Marcin Śmiglecki (O lichwie i trzech przedniejszych kontraktach, 1596) was partly used for drawing up a treatise on moral theology Mir s Bogom čeloveku (1669) published in the Kiev Monastery of the Caves. Both sample-sermons and treatises on moral theology were new literary genres for Orthodox tradition; their origin in the 17th century can be associated with Catholic influences. In both cases, the question of a translator from Polish into Church Slavonic and “prostaâ mova” remains open.

Abstract

A Compton suppression system is used to reduce the contribution of scattered gamma-rays that originate within the HPGe detector to the gamma-ray spectrum. The HPGe detector is surrounded by an assembly of guard detectors, usually NaI(T1). The HPGe and NaI(T1) detectors are operated in anti-coincidence mode. The NaI(T1) guard detector detects the photons that Compton scatter within, and subsequently escape from the HPGe detector. Since these photons are correlated with the partial energy deposition within the detector, much of the resulting Compton continuum can be subtracted from the spectrum reducing the unwanted background in gamma-ray spectra. A commercially available Compton suppression spectrometer (CSS) was purchased from Canberra Industries and tested at the Radiation Science and Engineering Center at Penn State University. The PSU-CSS includes a reverse bias HPGe detector, four annulus NaI(T1) detectors, a NaI(T1) plug detector, detector shields, data acquisition electronics, and a data processing computer. The HPGe detector is n-type with 54% relative efficiency. The guard detectors form an annulus with 9-inch diameter and 9-inch height, and have a plug detector that goes into/out of the annulus with the help of a special lift apparatus to raise/lower. The detector assembly is placed in a shielding cave. State-of-the-art electronics and software are used. The system was tested using standard sources, neutron activated NIST SRM sample and Dendrochronologically Dated Tree Ring samples. The PSU-CSS dramatically improved the peak-to-Compton ratio, up to 1000:1 for the 137Cs source.

Összefoglaló. A vena cava inferior leiomyosarcomája a vena tunica mediájából kiinduló igen ritka rosszindulatú daganat. Tünetei és radiomorfológiai jelei nem mindig juttatnak pontos kórisméhez, szövettani mintavétele pedig elhelyezkedése miatt veszélyes lehet. Diagnózisa ezért sokszor jelent kihívást a klinikusok számára.

A tumor sebészi eltávolítása mellett döntöttünk. Preoperatív biopsziát annak kockázatai miatt nem végeztünk.

A műtét során a v. cava inferior daganatát találtuk, a tumor eltávolítását végeztük a vena falának resectiójával, a jobb mellékvese eltávolításával és a jobb v. renalis neoimplantatiójával. A jobb feltárás érdekében a műtét elején cholecystectómiát is végeztünk. A műtét után szövődmény nem jelentkezett. A beteg adjuváns radioterápiában részesült.

A tumor korai diagnózisának és en bloc resectiójának köszönhetően jelentősen növeltük a beteg gyógyulási esélyeit, az elvégzett radioterápiával pedig csökkentettük a recidíva valószínűségét.

Summary. Leiomyosacroma of the inferior vena cava is an extremely rare malignancy originating from the tunica media of the venous wall. Its symptoms and radiomorphological signs do not always lead to an accurate diagnosis. Histological sampling can be dangerous due to its location. Therefore the diagnosis is often a challenge for clinicians. Its treatment is primarily surgical, supplemented by radiotherapy and chemotherapy applied together or in monotherapy.

In our case, an asymptomatic 74-year-old female patient was diagnosed with a tumor of the inferior caval vein located just above the right renal vein and involving the right adrenal gland. As serum cortisol, epinephrine, norepinephrine, adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), total and free testosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S), sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) was at normal level, the tumor showed no hormone secretion. Primary surgical resection was planned. Preoperative biopsy was not performed due to its high risk of complications.

During operation, tumor resection was performed by resection of the venous wall, removal of the right adrenal gland and neoimplantation of the right renal vein. For better exposure, cholecystectomy was also performed at the beginning of surgery. There were no postoperative complications. The patient received adjuvant radiation therapy.

Thanks to the early diagnosis of the tumor and the complete resection, we significantly increased the patient’s chances of total recovery. With the radiotherapy performed, we reduced the likelihood of tumor recurrence.
