Disturbed forest fragments comprise a substantial proportion of tropical landscapes, and these habitats along with associated ecotones have become important to tropical biodiversity conservation in human-modified landscapes. This study evaluated how tropical avifaunal communities respond to moderate habitat disturbances, such as shifting cultivation, selective logging and restoration from exotic plant species, in the Yagirala Forest Reserve, a fragmented tropical lowland rainforest in south-west Sri Lanka. Thirty circular plots with a 25-m fixed-radius, located to cover four prominent habitat types (secondary forest, Pinus-dominated forest, abandoned paddy lands and home gardens), were studied from March to December 2014. The results suggest that despite being fragmented and disturbed by human actions, the Yagirala Forest Reserve and associated ecotone collectively provide an important refuge for avifauna in the landscape context. The forest-home garden interface supported the highest avifaunal diversity. Edge habitats represented by home gardens and abandoned paddy lands generally supported greater bird richness. However, less disturbed secondary forest and Pinus-dominated forest were be more important for endemic and forest-specialist birds. Our results further highlight the potential value of wooded forest-home garden interfaces and forest stands restored with exotic pines in supporting native forest bird assemblages, especially in fragmented and isolated forest patches.
Thermic detectors are seldom used in analytical laboratories, in spite of their advantageous properties. Their theoretical
basis provides simple relations and useful equations for the design and construction of thermic liquid analyzers. In this
paper a home-made detector system was used for the continuous determination of hydrochloric acid. The results were in accordance
with the theoretical considerations.
Radon maps for each county in New York State have been developed onthe township level indicating the percent of homes with .148 Bq/m 3 (4 pCi/l)in the indoor air of the basement and living area. Estimates are based ona combination of nearly 45,000 basement-screening measurements and correlationsto surficial geology. Many of the towns and cities in the State with the highestaverage indoor radon concentrations are located on highly-permeable gravellysoils formed during the retreat of the Wisconsinan Glaciation. As many towns(32% of total) had .5 measurements, a project to obtain additional measurementsin high-risk towns produced results comparable to estimates based on correlationsto surficial geology. Radon risk maps for each county have been distributedto municipal governments, schools, and professionals in activities relatedto homes, buildings, and indoor air quality.
David Damrosch’s writings on world literature envision readers “making themselves at home abroad.” This essay argues against
his Thoreauvian optimism, given a world that is too large to grasp or to become a home. World literature cannot be naturalized.
Drawing on examples from Leibniz, Achebe, Walcott, and Petrarch, the essay proposes that world literature is best identified
in terms not of the value of authors and works, nor of the situations portrayed through the characters and plots, but of the
nature of the readerly experience. It examines the style of representation in world literature, which Brian Lennon’s book
In Babel’s Shadow productively characterizes as a kind of kitsch reflecting a struggle to communicate. World literature is not, as Damrosch
says, “writing that gains in translation,” but writing that retains its alienness even in the original.

This report describes the use of the Multilocus Sequence Typing (MLST) method for typing 32 strains previously identified as
. This system identified a great diversity between the investigated strains. The majority of strains belonged to already existing alleles found on the
MLST home page, and most of them represented clonal complexes ST-21 and ST-45, but there were some newly identified alleles as well.
The study presents an analysis of Canadian French literature in general and in particular that of the literary work of Antonine Maillet. We become acquainted with several particulars of the history of the Acadiens, which will constitute an interpretation of History, and which is put into parallelism with the Ancient Testament's events, Rabelais, Homer and Virgil. At the same time, the examination of Maillet's registers of styles highlight the metaphors of a local-global human history.
Certain experimental improvements, as variable sample size and irradiation position, automation and flexibility in radiation detection, broaden the measurable concentration range, increase the possible rate and accuracy of analysis and enlarge the application range of the home-made nuclear analyzer for fissile material analysis by delayed fission neutron counting and for short-lived multielement analysis by neutron activation gamma-ray spectrometry. Intercomparisons of results by various methods and laboratories show the need for regular checks of techniques to ensure reliable measurements.
According to Hermeneutics ch. 4, the analysis of non-assertive
sentences such as wishes, commands, etc. belongs to rhetoric or poetics. They
are, however, examined neither in the Rhetoric, nor in the Poetics,
where in ch. 20 their treatment is explicitly excluded from the art of poetry
and referred to that of delivery or performance. In this paper an explanation
is given for this discrepancy, based on an interpretation of Aristotle's
rejection of Protagoras' criticism of Homer.
