Abstract  

The construction of virtual science landscapes based on citation networks and the strategic use of the information therein shed new light on the issues of the evolution of the science system and possibilities for control. Citations seem to have a key position in the retrieval and valuation of information from scientific communication networks.Leydesdorff's approach to citation theory takes into account the dual-layered character of communication networks and the second-order nature of the science system. This perspective may help to sharpen the awareness of scientists and science policy makers for possible feedback loops within actions and activities in the science system, and probably nonlinear phenomena resulting therefrom. In this paper an additional link to geometrically oriented evolutionary theories is sketched and a specific landscape concept is used as a framework for some comments.

Increasing the stiffness of some frames of a structure and making the frames work together by using diaphragms is an alternative way of strengthening steel frameworks. The diaphragm effect of the cladding is well known, but due to the very sophisticated interaction among frames and the cladding, the theoretical solutions need experimental verification.The Laboratory of Structural Engineering, Technical University of Budapest carried out experimental investigations on full-scale simple elastic-plastic frames in 1976. As a part of it, the effect of cladding was studied. The goal of this paper is to compare the experimental results to the results calculated according to the stressed skin diaphragm design method. As the examined structural layouts were different, virtual structures were used to make the results comparable.

The aim of this study was a survey of relationships used for calculating ‘meat content’ with respect to the QUID regulation (Commission Directive , 2001). The recommended equations are presented in a concise form. The advantages of a possible introduction of the meat equivalent concept are also treated [assessment of lean content of the meat ingredient(s)]. A non-negligible condition for applying the QUID equations is, in principle, the equality of the fat-free protein concentrations of the various tissue types in the raw meat materials. This needs an adjustment of the protein concentrations of the recipes to a reference value (PFFref), which can be achieved by effective or virtual addition of water to the formulation or ‘removal’ of water from it. The influence of moisture loss during meat processing on QUID is also discussed. The results of various calculation methods are presented with examples.

Abstract  

A new computing algorithm has been developed to calculate the correction coefficient for a voluminous radiation source. The algorithm is based on the conception of a virtual efficiency center whose detector location depending on the radiation energy can be computed relatively to a point arbitrarily fixed on the detector axis. A scheme for the interaction of the gamma-radiation with the detector is proposed to minimize the number of preliminary experiments for the determination of empirical functions needed for realization of the method. Data are presented for computation of the linear attenuation coefficient of any material with known chemical composition and density. The validity of the developed approach has been proved by comparison of real and computed radioactivities for 5 different radiation energies in 12 cylindrical source-detector geometries.

In my paper, I am going to study Petrarch's autobiography through a standard theory of postmodern deconstructionism, and confute the traditional concept of this genre. According to this proposal, every text, canonized by tradition, breaks away from its own place, in order to reorganize everyday tabulations. My work proceeds at two levels. The first part is framed by the traditional quality of the act of writing/reading as self-confession or self-examination. The exact study of Secretum results in a new theory: the autobiography essentially becomes a kind of writing or reading method, recurring in every kind of text. The second part is dedicated to the true or verifiable character of the same composition. Shortly, in this part, I am going to confirm my previous hypothesis through the application of several philosophical prospects. Actually, this critical attitude results in the review of traditional paradigms turning every autobiography into a false-autobiography and all kinds of text into a virtual autobiography.

Abstract  

Trace239Pu and241Am contamination on a surface whose alpha count is dominated by235U and234U decay has been successfully quantified by counting swipes in external alpha-spectroscopy chambers. The swipe process, however, is labor intensive and subject to uncertainties in the swiping process as well as degraded spectral resolution due to the presence of the swipe material. A multichannel instrument for automated in situ measurements of interior and exterior contamination has been developed which incorporates a rotary table, 13 fixed ion-implanted silicon detectors, and spectroscopy electronics. Custom software was written to allow alpha-spectrometer to function as a virtual instrument in the LabView environment. This system gives improved speed and resolution as well as a complete log of the location of areas of high surface contamination, a feature not practical to obtain by other methods, and one which opens the possibility of long term studies such as Pu outgrowth evaluation employing the instrument. We present performance data as well as system integration, calibration, control, and dynamic geometric efficiency calculations related to the design of this and next generation systems.
