In a typical maximum clique search algorithm when optimality testing is inconclusive a forking takes place. The instance is divided into smaller ones. This is the branching step of the procedure. In order to ensure a balanced work load for the processors for parallel algorithms it is essential that the resulting smaller problems are do not overly vary in difficulty. The so-called splitting partitions of the nodes of the given graph were introduced earlier to meliorate this problem. The paper proposes a splitting partition of the edges for the same purpose. In the lack of available theoretical tools we assess the practical feasibility of constructing suboptimal splitting edge partitions by carrying out numerical experiments. While working with splitting partitions we have realized that they can be utilized as preconditioning tools preliminary to a large scale clique search. The paper will discuss this new found role of the splitting edge partitions as well.

Abstract

There is probably nobody in Hungary who does not know the name of József Béres; however, only a few will be aware what powerful commitment and perseverance lay behind his results. József Béres has acquired ever lasting merit in Hungarian trace element research and his fair and decent life that always radiated deep humanity is an example not only for those involved in scientifi c research or in the healing professions but also for those who “simply” would like to draw strength for the struggles of everyday life. The unwavering perseverance of the modestly dressed man who gained his knowledge by hard diligence as well as the honest desire to help those in need is a quality József Béres had; thus, his life is exemplary for all of us. When researching this brief essay, I relied primarily on biographical and other data associated with his research that had been generously provided by his family.

In many clique search algorithms well coloring of the nodes is employed to find an upper bound of the clique number of the given graph. In an earlier work a non-traditional edge coloring scheme was proposed to get upper bounds that are typically better than the one provided by the well coloring of the nodes. In this paper we will show that the same scheme for well coloring of the edges can be used to find lower bounds for the clique number of the given graph. In order to assess the performance of the procedure we carried out numerical experiments.

Absztrakt

A jelen közlemény célja, hogy bemutassa, milyen követelményeknek kell, hogy megfeleljen egy számítógépes rétegvizsgáló (CT) készülék, amennyiben nemcsak diagnosztikus célra szeretnék használni, hanem a besugárzástervezés alapjául szolgáló CT-felvételek elkészítéséhez is. A szerzők különböző fantomokkal tesztelték a készülékeket, ellenőrizték a CT-számok pontosságát, a CT-asztalok minőségét és mechanikus paramétereit. A különböző gyártók berendezéseinél mért CT-számok megfelelnek a Nemzetközi Atomenergia Ügynökség követelményeinek. A CT-készülékek geometriai torzítása elhanyagolható, míg az asztalok mechanikus paramétereinek értékei igen változók. A szerzők véleménye szerint a biztonságos működéshez nélkülözhetetlen a minőségellenőrzési-minőségbiztosítási protokoll kidolgozása.
